Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Islands - "America's Best Kept Secret"

Located in the Western Pacific, the CNMI is a beautiful chain of 14 islands. They were discovered and claimed by Spain from 1521 until they were sold to Germany in 1899. After World War I, Japan was named as the administrator of the islands by the League of Nations. In 1947, the U.S. was given the trusteeship of the islands by the U.N.

Finally, in 1978, they were the first of the Trust Territories to decide their own status. They elected to become a Commonwealth in political union with the United States - the only island group in all of Micronesia to do so.

There is a fascinating history of the islands and their role in World War II at The CNMI Guide. It has some awesome pictures, too.
