Demented and sad, but social.
Gone but not forgotten, Gary Gygax is given credit for inventing our universe in the New York Times by Adam Rogers in his piece called Geek Love (with chart-y goodness!).
It's a little bit of a stretch to say that Dungeons and Dragons is at the heart of all things modern culture has wrought, but not really by much when you think about it (says the man who posts under the pseudonym of his favorite D&D character).
About my only real argument with Mr. Rogers is in his example near the end. I mean, "Iron Man" instead of "The Dark Knight"??? The man is clearly desperately poor and/or insane.

It's funny, but I always used the term "social" when I described my affinity for playing D&D to folks. Certainly the few years that we played regularly, I was interested in the game, but mostly I was looking forward to the "getting togethr" part. And of course that is what I miss the most. (Especially since two of that gang went and moved away...)

Yes I was a bit sad when I heard of his death.
Like Ric's post, I remember those days so fondly, those imagination filled afternoons fueled with Mt Dew and Pizza Oven Pizza. Great times and good friends.
Don't forget beer and donuts...
And gray coffee!
