MIRKWOOD - The East Bight, also know as Mirkwood's Treeless Tract, is the great indentation in the eastern edge of Mirkwood. This region, which is roughly square in shape, is not a natural formation. It is the result if generations of forestry by the Northmen, who historically occupied the lands east of the forest. Officials from Mirkwwod announced a plan to re-forest the area and will fund the project by recovering Nimphelos, The Great Pearl from the Isle of Balar. The Pearl is reportedly the size of a dove's egg and was found on the shores of the Isle of Balar by Elves. Originally owned by Cirdan, he gave it to his friend and ally Thingol. The Pearl was lost along with other valuable gems and jewelry such as the necklace Nauglamir, when Thingol summoned the Dwarves from the Blue Mountains to set Nimphelos into Nauglamir. The Dwarves double crossed Thingol and slew him in his own treasury, stealing the jewels.
Rumor has it that a cave-in in the Blue Mountains buried the stolen treasure and recent discoveries by some specialized Archeo-Elves have brought about speculation that the whereabouts of the collapsed cavern has been determined. A team is being assembled to excavate the find. Representatives from Moria declined comment other than to say they always believed the legend of Nimphelos to be a myth.
