Merry Fellows poised to defend crown
by Gilburdor Ethylanidel
OLD FOREST - After a surprise post season run that resulted in an unexpected championship, the Old Forest Merry Fellows have become prepared to defend their title for the 2010 season through a variety of trades and free agent signings.
"Oh we started out with a nothing but a whimper, no one thought we could win, but their minds were changed in September," owner and General Manager Tom Bombadil sang. "It's hard to improve this squad but I certainly made a try, but only time will tell if my off season moves will fly."
The Merry Fellows started the 2009 season with an 0-7 record after failing to land a single free agent. Then, Bombadil completed a series of trades that turned the Merry Fellows from pretenders to contenders. This off season, he only had a few holes to fill, in the bullpen and on the bench. Bombadil also upgraded in the rotation and at catcher by acquiring legendary hitter Rafur Rockback and 27-year-old starter Eralqua Megilwen from Gondolin.
"Our rotation isn't quite as strong as it was before, but we have all the hitting we'll ever need and a little more," Bombadil continued while dancing a Merry jig. "Other teams improved more than my sweet old team, winning for a second time would be like a dream."
The Merry Fellows filled their bullpen and bench holes by signing free agents Timlus "Tim-may!" Kyler-Gul, Pimra Gàlas, and Camellia Gamgee.
Kyler-Gul is a solid hitting outfielder best known for his stellar defensive skills. He will primarily be used as a late innings defensive replacement. Pimra Gàlas and Camellia Gamgee are both starting pitchers who signed three year deals for the minimum wage, with the intent of being converted to the bullpen. Gàlas will start the year at Triple A West Shire, and Gamgee will break with the major league squad.
