Whither Grimli Goramir?
MIDDLE EARTH - Youth, it seems, has left some of the early stars of the SGCBL in its wake. It is somewhat understandable that aging players like Hafur Goblincrusher, 36, and 38-year-olds, Golloron Galadrienduil and Vamsh "The Hatchet" Ratchewer, have gone un-signed. However, that doesn't seem to explain why many skilled veterans are being passed over, not even being offered jobs as backups.
Take Grimli Goramir, for example. Goramir, 34, was one of the original stars of the league. His 11 RBI performance in the 7th game of the inaugural season is still unmatched. He is a 5-time All-Star and 2-time winner of the Legolas Fielder award at second base. He has 268 career HR (12th all-time) and is among the top 25 players in RBI, doubles, walks, and runs scored. He may not be the great hitter he once was, but surely a team could use him as a backup infielder.
Likewise, Lumth Elváril, 34, is a brilliant base stealer who can play with terrific range in the outfield. Disil Axesmith, 36, has a lifetime batting average of .308 and hit .285 last season with a cannon for an arm.
As the season progresses, we may see some of these vets get picked up. In the meantime, they seem to be counting down to retirement.
