Rockbinder Traded in 3-Way Deal

GORGOROTH - Ralin Rockbinder, the first player selected to play for the SGCBL in 2003, has been traded from Gorgoroth (formerly Bree) in a 3-team deal that involved the Balrogs, Bears and Fairies. Rockbinder, 28, was the league's first Frodo...

Gorgoroth, looking to move what they see as a declining Rockbinder off their payroll, put out trade feelers earlier in the off-season. Carrock, seeing the opportunity to acquire a relatively young, speedy, power hitter who is also an excellent outfielder, approached Balrog owners about the possibility of a trade. However, in order to take on Rockbinder's $13.6 million salary, the Bears would have to get rid of someone. The likely candidate was Hafur Goblincrusher. Goblincrusher, 33, has been Carrock's slugging first baseman since coming from Mirkwood in 2005. He is currently making $10.8 million, and his contract runs out at the end of this season.

The Balrogs, however, were not interested in Hafur. They turned their sights to Carrock's young catcher, Novathiel Novathien. The proposed deal would have sent Rockbinder and minor league outfielder, Kayoti the Wiley, to the Bears for Novathien and Akhakan Dimcirion. But with Carrock owners unwilling to lose Goblincrusher's bat without anything in return, they needed a third party willing to take Hafur in trade.

Enter Bucklebury. Responding to Carrock's queries about Goblincrusher, the Fairies offered to a straight swap of their 1B, Galogorn Elvol, for Goblincrusher. Elvol, 32, doesn't have Hafur's power, but he has a better batting average, and for $8 million less than Goblincrusher, the Bears jumped at the opportunity.

Additionally, Gorgoroth agreed to a deal that would send outfielder Rabur "Rocky" Rockback to the Fairies in exchange for reliever Haleodriel Grilbo.

So, Gorgoroth gets Novathien, Dimcirion and Grilbo; Carrock gets Rockbinder, K. the Wiley and Elvol; and Bucklebury gets Goblincrusher and Rockback.

Bucklebury: Quest for a Manager

by Dia Elrubo BUCKLEBURY - The initial plan to find a new manager after what team owner, xade, has dubbed 'The Cheese Affair', was to produce a T.V show. Not just any TV show, but the "greatest damn show"...

But backstage it wasn't anywhere near as rosy. Virgil's ego was growing rampant, the team started refering to him as Virgil Bighead. They were very original jokes. BigHead... that still makes me laugh... But it didn't just stop with Virgil, other starters wanted their lick of the 'Big Brass Ring'. In particular, Christof Worm seemed to feel he was entitled to it or something. And then came the hitters. Foxburr keep muttering that he was gunna be a star, Galdor tried the 'You pay me the most so I must be the most important' line, even Mandicer was roaring at me when we walked past each other in the office. It had to stop.

And it has. Virgil has been shipped off to Moria, and the show has been cancelled. "Much to the teams dismay, but more to mine. I had hoped to find a manager for the Fairies with that wacked out money making scheme... Perhaps I need to come up with something aa little more wacked out and money making...," said xade.

Maybe he should sleep on it.

An Interview with Christof Worm

by Dia Elrubo BUCKLEBURY - This reporter sat down to have a chat with one of the newest Fairies, starting pitcher Christof "Royal" Worm. Worm, 26, was picked up in the Rule 5 draft this spring, and immediately stepped...

R: So, Christof, you were picked up by Bucklebury in the Rule 5 Draft from Gondor.

C: Well, yes, that is true, but only because the Gondor line-up was most excellent.

R: Ah yes, and how do you feel about playing for the Fairies?

C: I do have to say that I am most impressed with both the infrastructure and the players. Especially the bullpen, I believe they are most severely underrated.

R: And the starters?

C: There is a reason Bucklebury needed me.

R: I see... well, there has been a huge turn around at Bucklebury this season, you went from a pack of mediocire hitters to excellent. You're fan base has already gone up 5 points. What do you think has happen with the team to bring about this change.

C: Isn't that obvious? Why it's me.

R: You? But Bucklebury's pitching is down from last year. And you've been throwing 5.77.

C: Um... Quite. But there are other factors involved. Like our Rookies. And the free agency, we have 12 players on our list that weren't there last year.

R: 12? I'm glad I wasn't there when Xade was swinging that ax. Speaking of Xade, have you heard from him since his departure?

C: Well yes, I mean... Quite.

R: Excuse me?

C: Quite.

R: o.k... I'll take that as a maybe... OK, just one last question, Why the nickname?

C: Well I believe that should be obvious. For generations my family has been at the top of the A list. We have been wined and dined by royally. We quite literally have pomp running through our veins.

R: But, I haven't heard of any socialites nor royally by the name of Worm.

C: Quite.

R: I see. Well, thank you for your time, this has been Dia Elruborn reporting.

Fairies Shocked As Manager Quits

By Peroido Baggins Bucklebury Times BUCKLEBURY - A shocked Bucklebury team received stunning news just moments before the start of the new season. Team manager, Xade, has decided to leave the team, reportedly for his own safety. "I's quits!"...

When it was suggested that xade take over managerial duties, he replied, "What's that? Me? No, you don't understand. I'm a screw-up. A fraud. I don't belong here. Well, I know that some teams have a DH. Sometimes people 'Hit for the cycle'. I know that everything is Bree's fault, and that everyone hates something called the 'Yang-keys'... Hey... is that someone at the door?"

Later, at the official news conference announcing the manager's departure, xade had this to say:

"Xade and I have come to a very agreeable agreement. He's going to break his promise to take the Fairies to victory in order to save is own skin, and I'm going to suppress the rage I'm feeling right now. I feel that this is a very positive stepping stone for the Fairies. We still got Minto. And he's gunna be a star. A star I tells ya! 2007 is gunna be a great year for the Fairies! We're gunna be hitting those... round things. And our... um... round thing throwers are gunna be throwing their round things so the guy can catch it... and... Oh my god, we're so screwed! I'm a fraud! I don't even know... Hey what's that smell, smells kinda like chloro...hmpmmpmhpmhmm..."

With that, the press conference was over, and xade was dragged away by his PR Ogres. A second Press release was put out, but all it contained were cheesy lines like:

"2007 - Got Fairie?" and "2007 - Revenge of the Fairies"

Following those slogans was a crudely drawn picture of a stick figure holding a cup with the words "2007 - year of the Fairie."

I don't think we will be getting anything more out of the Bucklebury board at the moment. But I will keep you all up to date on how this plays out. Perhaps it will be a good thing for the Fairies. Perhaps not. I'm sure time will tell.

Bucklebury Report

By Peroido Baggins BUCKLEBURY - There was much joy and dancing in the Fairie Dome tonight as Bucklebury Manager xade announced the latest arrival to the club. "Today's, the firsts of the free agent days, and we's signed Pimth...

"Initially, I had reserves about playing for a club like the fairies, they're are a young team and might look to me for leadership, I hope not. Plus, they had a .414 winning average last year. But then the Bucklebury finance division drove a oliphant drawn carriage full of money up to my house and I couldn't say no. So now I'm a fairie and I couldn't be happier."

But not everyone is happy with this news , and not just the other five managers trying for him, upon hearing the news of the signing, Eond Elruborn was heard to say the following

"duh... He plays rightfield... I play rightfield... uuhhh... ummmm... but... how can we both play rightfield?... Lugnar? Do you know?... if he's playing rightfield, how will I play... oh wait..." And then proceeded to put his mace through three lockers before being security 'Calmed him down'.

A Bucklebury PR rep released this statement.

"I would just like to state that the rumours that Eond 'flipped out' are completely bogus. He didn't not smash up a locker room and he is not currently tied to a bed, obviously Eond wasn't happy with hearing the news. He has been playing at Bucklebury his entire career, but these things happen. Bucklebury management is currently doing the best they can to find him a place on a winning team (or whatever team gives the best offer)."

So, there you have it. Obviously, Bucklebury is extremely happy to add this hitting superstar to their current mix of youth. I for one have to say that I have never seen a batter with a better eye for the ball.

2008 - The Year of the Faerie

By Peroido Baggins BUCKLEBURY - But for now, lets just focus on the 2007 season. I have been lucky enough to be granted a press conference with the much feared yet highly misunderstood manager of the Bucklebury Fairies, Xade....

So with the 2007 season dedicated to putting together some resemblance of a pitching squad, xade looks to be doing fairly well to be delivering his promise to the people of Bucklebury that they will once again be enjoying Post Season cheer by the end of 2008.

"Well, afters I tooks over the squad backs at the ends of the '05 season, I's thoughts to myself. I'm a born and bred Buckleburian. We's deserves better. After the shambles the team was left in from its former owner, I's knew I would have to do somethings to bring this glorious club back to where's it's belongs. So I mades a promise. The playoffs by 08."

So that's where we are. Bucklebury look to be making good progress in their hitting, Xade is still as menacing as ever, and I'm not wearing concrete boots so it all looks to be looking good. Let us wish these brave fairies a little luck in their '07 season shall we?

In Search of Kogar

An Intimate Chat with League Record-Breaker, Kogar Facedragger by Lavender Bracegirdle Boffins relayed by Radagast the Brown SHIRE, EAST FARTHING It was a clear day, a promising day, when I set out to find Middle Earth's fastest rising star--not fair...

Despite Cap's nasty reputation for violently killing Hobbits, my will was set, and only death would break it. Within a few minutes, I found myself at the Buckland home of team owner and manager, Brandywine Bucktook, (a third cousin of mine on my mother's side.) While I munched on a mid-morning snack of seed cakes and cheese with tea, Bran made arrangements for an interview on my behalf. Two hours later, I was on my way to Mordor.

BARAD-DUR
The smell caught me off-guard as I followed an Orc named "Krag" to the "apartment" (term used loosely) Kogar sublets in the tower of Barad-Dur. Bran Bucktook had warned me about the smell, and her words served as a reminder as I struggled to keep composure. "Pretend you don't smell a thing," she advised. "It's important to remember that they don't like the way we smell anymore than we like their scent. Don't go on about how they reek unless you'd like to find yourself the main course of an impromptu picnic."

As a safety precaution, Bran had arranged for me to be escorted by Radagast the Brown, a kindly wizard with a powerful staff the size of a malorn tree. Radagast remained one step behind, ever-alert, as we entered the cubicle-sized living quarters of Kogar Facedragger.

Kogar immediately welcomed us inside and offered a draught of strong mead he had imported just for the occasion. The Orc was all smiles. "I don't get many visitors here," he said, as he seated himself atop a pile of rotting carcasses. "Could I offer you some meats? A fine dwarf leg, perhaps?" Though I had missed elevensies and it looked like I'd be missing lunch, too, I politely declined and cut right to the chase.

"Tell me, Cap: Who is the real Kogar Facedragger?" I gently prodded. The Orc, still smiling, placed a hand over the spot where a heart might potentially be. "The real Kogar," he began, "is not just about guts and glory. I am an ocean, a river, a poet, a song."

Stunned by this surprising turn of tenderness, I prodded further, asking him to share with us a glimpse into his innermost thoughts. What he said next brought a tear to my eye.

"I collect fingers, dwarf fingers mostly, but I also have an extensive collection of elf and man flesh. I take long walks in the rain, and love to snuggle round a good, blazing fire." Cap wiped a tear with his sleeve. "My secret desire is to someday have a room full of little Orclings running around. I'm a real family Orc."

Cap then told me of his Orclinghood on the slopes of Mount Doom; how his father had tragically been eaten by his mother, and then his steady climb to success as a professional baseball player. When asked about the recent incident involving the dismembered Hobbit, Cap shrugged and said, "I'm just an honest Orc trying to make an honest living. That particular Hobbit had it coming."

"Was there provocation, then?" I asked. A shadow crossed Cap's face as he growled, "He looked at me funny." Almost immediately, the shadow lifted, and Cap jumped from his seat. "Do you wanna play Twister? I've got board games. Scrabble? Parcheesi?"

I declined his offer to play and thanked the Orc for a brilliant interview.

BREE
Radagast the Brown speaking. It is with a heavy heart that I write the sad end to this tale. Minutes after Lavender's fond farewell, a band of neighboring Orcs had us surrounded. I fought off some thirty Orcs, but by the time I had finished, it was too late. The only remains I found of dear Lavender were her notebook and this quill I am using to write with. Poor Lavender's last words were, "I'll wrap up this last paragraph when we get to the Prancing Pony."

I have taken the liberty of editing any general spelling errors and filling in missing details for the final copy, especially in relation to the size of my staff.

Sleep well, sweet Hobbit.

Losers Move to Buckland, Renamed 'Fairies'

By Nerin Silverfeet BUCKLAND - A harried-looking, blood-smeared Brandywine Bucktook, team owner, gave a startling announcement to League officials this morning that the Lonely Mountain Losers ball club will be relocating to Buckland, near the Brandywine River of the Shire....

Permission to change the name was first obtained from League Commissioner, Solonor Rasreth. "I didn't want to call the team together for a new-name brainstorming session without getting the green light from Commissioner Rasreth first," said Bucktook. "I didn't want to get the team's hopes up. You know how Orcs can be when they've got their hearts set on something--they can get pretty riled up, and I don't need anyone eating anyone else again this year."

Initial brainstorming sessions went well, as the Dwarf-monopolized team met with their Orc, Elf, and Hobbit team mates in Smaug's Lair, Lonely Mountain, but matters soon turned ugly. "We dwarves were in favor of 'the Lonely Mountain Arkenboys,' as a nod to our most precious Arkenstone," said Hammermaker. "But with the addition of certain female Hobbits on the team, that name was instantly shot down."

Camellia Baggins, recently signed for the Minor Leagues, suggested a less sex-exclusive name. "I wanted 'the Lonely Mountain Lovegirdles,'" said Baggins. "But once I suggested it, all Mordor broke loose." The team burst into fierce and bloody brawling, which team management was unable to control. After three days of relentless fist-swinging and axe-brandishing, team owner Bran Bucktook made an executive decision. "I pretty much stood on top of a pile of Orc carcasses and let them have it," said Bucktook. "I told them that I'd had enough of this stinking cave and that we'd be moving the team entirely to Buckland, where the sun actually shines once in a while. Of course, this announcement was met by more bloodshed, but by then all the real troublemakers had fallen to their deaths, and we were able to pick up the pieces and move on."

The new team name was given a mixed reception, but none were more upset about it than team leader Kobur Hammermaker. "We've gone from being the Losers to the Fairies," said Hammermaker. "It's just gone from bad to worse."

Hammermaker has accused team owner Bran Bucktook of moving to Buckland for personal motives. "She's only interested in a good draught of 1420. We could've moved anywhere in Middle Earth, but she chose an area particularly well known for the growing of pipe-weed. I think that says something about her motivations." Bucktook denies the allegations. "The decision to move to Buckland was made purely in the interest of the team."

The team will be training as The Bucklebury Fairies this spring.
