Mysterious Owner Blocks Offer

via MIRKWOOD SCROLL; A Wilderness Tabloid MIRKWOOD by Everard Grenthumb from Dwaling - Ever since the players revolted and blocked their trades, there has been mysterious goings on around the Mirkwood camp. Quite alot of indecision and confusion has been...

The rumor is that Cableman has lost control of his team and it is now being run by a mysterious owner no one has ever seen. A lot of speculation about who or what has been bandied about but no real facts had been determined.

This reporter has dug into this rumor and found out some interesting facts. From an inside source in the Marauder's front office I was able to gain access to the team's financial situation. It seems they have just over $83M tied up in payroll and personnel salaries. That should leave them roughly $17M for Free Agent Offers. I was able to get my hands on several offers and saw that Cableman had extended offers to several players totalling less than the available $17M. Strangely only about $3M of it has been allowed, while the others, adding up to still less than the available sum have been Refused by this mysterious owner.

Looking closely at one of the contracts that was refused I could clearly see Cableman's signature on the approved offer line and then below that in a very old and long forgotton language a signature that I couldn't quite make out in the Refused section.

While I was in there the room suddenly got cold and color seemed to fade so I beat feet out of there, but I am now positive that the rumor is true and the team is in fact in control by one of "The Nine", one of the RingWraiths who has before now kept himself invisible. Who know how long he will be here, but I'm sure that if one is here that means other teams have fallen under the same spell also.

Sometime during next season there is supposed to be a Middle Earth Rules Review going on regarding the game of baseball and how it is played. Hopefully this issue of the mysterious owners will be resolved and the real Owners can once again take control of their teams.

Rumors of an old feud resurface

via Everard Greenthumb MIRKWOOD SCROLL; A Wilderness Tabloid . MIRKWOOD - Pitching for Bree, former Marauder minor leaguer Phaitai Fandil. He was signed as a free agent by Mirkwood on 6/17/2003. A very brash young 18 year old Elf who...

There were always rumors that Fandil never forgave the Marauders, and I'm sure with the continuing successes of Catsquisher his anger festered even more. He spent 2 seasons as an unclaimed free agent until he was signed as a free agent by Bree on 3/1/2006. He finally worked his way up to the majors in 2010, where twice he faced Mirkwood and had an 0 - 1 record with only 9.0 innings pitched he had 19 hits against him and an ERA of 9.00.
Both games Catsquisher was instrumental in Fandil downfall, going 4 for 5 one game and getting the RBI that knocked him out of the other game.
The pressure this year must have been too much for him, after the Cheese lost 2 straight to Mirkwood, Fandil was pitching the third game. With Mirkwood once again up early on Fandil 2 - 1 they were coming to bat in the top of the 3rd...

Ballscarer in tense contract negotiations

via Everard Grenthumb from Dwaling MIRKWOOD - There were some tense moments in the owners office as an All-Star player announced his intention to become a Free-Agent 1 year early. Owner Cableman and Manager Thranduil Elvenking and several others of...

The tension filled office dialogue was leaked by a source involved in the meeting and this is how the drama unfolded. After the initial small talk was dispensed with, Manager Elvenking started the negotiations by putting what he considered a generous offer on the table of double the 26 year old Ballscarer's current salary of $4,028,571 which was $8,037,814 for 4 years.

Ballscarer, who is an Orc, and his agent conferred and after about an hour responded that the amount of money was not enough and he was getting impatient. The Management Team then huddled and according to the source they were starting to sweat a little because they hadn't taken Ballscarer seriously at first. It was decided that they needed to go bigger on the salary and longer in duration so Elvenking came back after more than an hour and a half and pitched this offer hoping Ballscarer would catch it...
$11,657,571 for 6 years.

With a stoic poker face giving no indication one way or the other, Ballscarer and his agent once again moved off into hushed discussion. My source indicated that at this point the Owner Cableman was extremely nervous and had begun pacing back and forth. After about 40 minutes Ballscarer returned and stated that he thought that the number of years on the offer was too many.

According to my source at that moment Cableman blanched and all the blood drained from his face, he looked like he was going to have a heart attack. The Management Team conferred again and decided that the tone of Ballscarer's reply was such that the dollar amount was ok, just the number of years was too long. The proposal to try for $11,657,571 for 5 years was put to a vote among the Management Team but Elvenking stopped it. He reminded them that if Ballscarer was good with the money that meant he was good with the total of $11,657,571 for 6 years or $69,945,426. So if he were offered $11,657,571 for 5 years it would be an insult because we were now offering him less money. So it was decided to divide the $69,945,426 by 5 and offer Ballscarer $13,989,086 for 5 years. A very visibly shaken Cableman delivered the offer to Ballscarer.

Ballscarer's Agent chuckled as they moved off to discuss the most recent and most likely 3rd and last offer. After about 15 minutes as the Mangement Team looked on just out of earshot it bacame apparent that Ballscarer and his agent were arguing. It became more and more heated until finally Ballscarer reached out and grabbed the agent by the neck and tossed him into one of the overstuffed armchairs on the other side of the office. Ballscarer then strode toward Cableman who feared he had lost his star Catcher, but was shocked and relieved when Ballscarer said "I accept your offer". The office immediately broke into applause.

Ballscarer and Cableman went out onto the skybox's balcony and announced the agreement to the hushed crowd who broke into a frenetic applause which lasted a full 2 hours.

I am a reporter but I am also a Marauder fan so I was very excited to have been covering this story.

Dunharrow making early deals

DUNHARROW - The Devils are wasting no time launching into 2009. Before the playoffs were even finished, the team had agreed to two trades, including a deal that gave up their first 5 draft picks to Mirkwood....

The first trade of 2009 involved a swap with Rohan that sent 3B Bulbo Sandybanks to the RoughRiders in exchange for Fosco Bramble and $20 million. Sandybanks, 23, was the Devils 2nd pick in 2004. The young hobbit has shown great potential, but a string of injuries has kept him from breaking out. Bramble, 24, was Isengard's 1st pick in the 2004 draft. Traded from the Raiders to Rohan last season, Bramble has yet to show what he can do at the plate, but he is a pretty good infielder with a strong arm.

In the Mirkwood deal, Dunharrow decided to give up on this season's draft and try to obtain some young talent that could be used more immediately. For their first 5 picks, the Devils recieved $21 million and pitchers Fosco Sandybanks and Friagorn Eluldur, infielders Lolindir Ciryatan and Drogo Knotwise, and outfielders Dain Stoneteeth and Gunus Goblinbinder.

Sandybanks, 23, was Mirkwood's 3rd pick in 2004 and has bounced around the Marauder minors ever since. He has yet to blossom into a star reliever, but he has incredible stuff. Eluldur, 28, was signed by Mirkwood in 2003. He has made a couple of September trips to the big leagues, but has yet to find his niche.

Ciryatan, 25, is a hard-hitting corner man, who's played at first and third for Isengard and Mirkwood in the minors. Knotwise, 27, has a gun for an arm and can play 2B, 3B and SS. He can hit a little, too.

Stoneteeth, 22, was Moria's 2nd pick in 2006 and was traded to Mirkwood in 2007. He has great range in all outfield positions and has worked hard at getting his strikeout totals lowered. Goblinbinder, 27, is also a multi-faceted outfielder with a good bat and strong arm.

Marauders look for a three-peat in 2007

By Everard Greenthumb from Dwaling Mirkwood Scroll: A Wilderness Tabloid MIRKWOOD - The Marauders have embarked on their 2007 season with renewed vigor and determination. They took some time to relax and enjoy the fruits of their back-to-back victories...

Manager Thranduil Elvenking refused to comment on the complaining players, but said in a brief statement; "I would like to say that the Marauders have had a very good spring training camp and the majority of the players worked hard and showed some improvement. We should have a very competitive and a very exciting team this season, the fans will be rewarded with great games this year." In true Elven fashion Elvenking steered clear of any predictions due to the jinx factor. When told of the MESN predictions Elvenking ignored the question and ended the conversation by walking into the clubhouse.

This year does promise some excitement with the return of the 5 Starting Pitchers and 4 of the 5 Relievers from the bullpen. The new addition is Reliever Tigtai Tämir, a Lefty called up from the Taur e-Ndaedelos Woods AAA Team. "He has the Stuff, but whether he can produce the Movement on the ball remains to be seen.

In the field the Infield has remained intact with one minor exception, First Baseman Galaigast 'The Chef' Faromli will replace First Baseman Valin 'Dinger' Graniteslinger at the 1B position with Graniteslinger filling the Designated Hitter role. Elvenking explained that he wanted to give Graniteslinger a chance to concentrate on his hitting which slipped a little last year. Additionally they will be joined by Utlity Infielder Uujjeen 'Great' Maker to round out the Infield.

In the Outfield Left Fielder Minto 'The Admiral' Gamwich has become the defacto hands down leader with the departure of two veteran outfielders Celaum and Gameahir. Joining Gamwich in the outfield will be Center Fielder Loinar 'Oats' Oathsmelter, Right Fielder Denaigol 'Hitman' Denaihir, Right Fielder Thurlla 'The Arm' Norŕ, with backup outfielders Center Fielder Malin 'Whalen Malin' Brandybuck and Left Fielder Gabghash 'Gash' the Crazy.

One thing is for certain, the Marauder Fans will get their money's worth the entire season.

Mirkwood Scroll: A Wilderness Tabloid

By Everard Greenthumb from Dwaling MIRKWOOD - The Marauders have done it! They won the Return of The King Series against a formidable Rohan team. Mirkwood had been counted out for several reasons during the year, one being that...

He continued by talking about each of his players whom he praised for their effort and perseverance. Of note mentioned was this season's acquisition Starting Pitcher Grikak 'Treehugger' Dryadpoker who did well for the Marauders during the season but who, during the RoTK Series, took on the renowned Rohan Starting Pitcher Legeron Iseomer and in 2 games was able to come away with wins.

He also mentioned the surprising newcomer Starting Pitcher Halin 'Hail Stone' Goblinfist who went 21-9 this year with a 2.63 ERA. He is only the second Marauder to have a 20 win season, last year Starting Pitcher Gwelf 'Guns' Goriborn went 21-8. This year Goriborn had a very respectable 17-7 season with a nice ERA of 2.90. This season Starting Pitcher Denaumir 'Iceball' Deneadur struggled a little with a 12-10 record, although he performed well in the postseason and had a record 20 K's in a single game.

This Year the Marauders also had several hitters end the season hitting above .300.
Catcher Curt 'The Bat' Ballscarer .319
Second Baseman Mohair 'Mo' Catsquisher .315
First Baseman Galaigast 'The Chef' Faromli .310, used as a DH mostly this season.
Shortstop Thauthor 'Hands' Smeand .308
Right Fielder Denaigol 'Hitman' Denaihir .303

Additionally of note:
Left Fielder Minto 'The Admiral' Gamwich had 70 stolen bases on the season.

Two of the core relievers for the Marauders this year were Reliever Wulo 'Wookie' Wolfdragger and Reliever Gebur 'The Chiseler' Chiselmaker who both performed very well this season. In a surprise move Elvenking's first order of business was to trade both to clear some salary and to make room for a couple of rookie prospects currently on the Taur e-Ndaedelos Woods AAA Team, Reliever Tigtai Tämir and Reliever Lonak Fleshkiller.

The Marauders plan to take a couple of days off to let the Ale wearoff and then they are expected to show up for practice as usual again.

Mirkwood Welcomes Back Goraugrin

by Everard Grenthumb from Dwaling MIRKWOOD - The halfway point of the season has the Marauders holding on to first place in the Elf Division. Although they have had some amazing weeks--Including a streak of 11 straight wins and...

Denaigol Denaihir, a young 23 year old prospect already has the makings of a great outfielder and will initially back up against Right-Handers and start agianst Left-Handers. Veteran outfielder Gandolf Gameahir, who has started for the Marauders since the inagural season and recently has been in a slump, has graciously accepted a role on the Taur e-Ndaedelos Woods AAA Team to make room for the young prospect.

Manager Thranduil Elvenking has placed his faith in his four starting pitchers dubbed "The Four Aces". Geadriel 'Dark Light' Gamialf (10-1), Gwelf 'Guns' Goriborn (12-5) POM June, Denaumir 'Iceball' Deneadur (8-5) POM May, and Isiawyn 'Eyes' Imrialob (7-6). Additionally stepping up is veteran Closer Disin 'The Hatchet' Axesmith (4-2) with 18 Saves.

A solid infielding crew with Catcher Curt 'The Bat' Ballscarer batting .303, First Baseman Valin 'Dinger' Graniteslinger leading the Shire Conference in Homeruns with 26, Second Baseman Mohair 'Mo' Catsquisher leading the entire League batting .381, Third Baseman Gobur 'Rock' Foetooth 2nd in the Shire Conference batting .362 & BOM May, and Shortstop Thauthor 'Hands' Smeand batting .304.

The outfield has been struggling but now with a few newer additions they should be able to step up and take control. The main three are veteran Rightfielder Myrla 'The Mentor' Elvörion who after a slow start has come back in May and June batting .333 and .341 respectively, Centerfielder Loinar Oathsmelter who after an adjustment period in May after arriving has hit .290 in June, and Leftfielder Minto 'The Admiral' Gamwich who is 4th in the Shire Conference in Stolen Bases.

Manager Elvenking has assembled a fine array of individual talents, but his challenge remains to get them working together as a cohesive unit.

Cannonball Deathskull joins Marauders

By Everard Grenthumb from Dwaling MIRKWOOD - News broke recently of the signing of a young starting pitcher, Ufrat Deathskull, to the Marauder's Single-A Farm Team the Greenwood Greats. This will be the third team in three years for...

Ufrat Deathskull's life wasn't easy from the beginning. As a young Orc in Mordor, he used to go down to the river and throw stones at the waterfowl, which no doubt was the genesis of his amazing control. At 7 years, he was shanghied by the Corsairs of Umbar and forced into years of servitude on the boats. But with his strong arm he was able to earn the respect of some of the other Corsairs and was soon made a full crew member in his own right. He practiced on the seagulls, and when battles raged on the water, Deathskull's ability to throw a rock through an enemy's skull became legend. His arm continued to get stronger with the rigors of sea life, and soon he was throwing cannonballs hard enough to put a foot-wide hole in an enemy ship at the waterline.

After 11 years at sea, he wanted to change his life and felt baseball was the portal to fame for him. At the Mirkwood open tryouts Manager Thranduil Elvenking was impressed with the Orc's control, but had to think for a while about how little stuff he showed. Finally, Elvenking summoned Deathskull, saying, "Ufrat, you are an outstanding strike-out pitcher, but you need to work on your stuff. You work on it and you have aplace in the Mirkwood organization." While thanking Elvenking, Deathskull whirled and beaned a raven in flight at 100 feet. Elvenking just smiled.

Elvenking Fires Up Marauders

By Thorin Mithrilfist MIRKWOOD - Manager Thranduil Elvenking has done a good job coaching the Marauders to their present position of 2nd place, only 7 games back in the Elf division. He has moved pitchers around, made relievers out...

Then he singled out the Isiawyn "Eyes" Imrialob and said, "The Mirkwood Management thinks you may have something since the just extended your contract. You are now in the starting rotation. Do well or you'll find yourself playing for the Greenwood Greats also."

Then he turned his attention from the pitchers to the batters. Looking each player in the eyes he circled the room and said, "You people aren't helping these pitchers out enough. WE NEED RUN PRODUCTION!! We have the 3rd best batting average in the league and we have a dismal 62-62 record. How are we so good at getting hits yet so poor in run production? Get on base and make things happen. If a runner is in scoring position - HIT HIM IN!!!"

Finally in his most controversial statement of the night, Elvenking walked over to stand directly in front of veteran Shortstop Bugar "Loogy" Axeslammer, and said, "Since we brought up Catsquisher you have been slacking. You have 1 week to bring your batting average above .200, or you are gone, contract or no contract!"

Needless to say everyone will be watching the progress of the Marauders this week.

Elvenking Questions League's Balls

By Thorin Mithrilfist MIRKWOOD - Manager Thranduil Elvenking held a short press conference today providing a Mauraders Team status report after the first four weeks of play. After his opening statement thanking everyone for attending, he threw out an...

He went on to provide specific numbers:

Through 11 Home games...

*2003
2B - 25
3B - 4
HR - 19

*2004
2B - 40
3B - 7
HR - 26

"We expected to have more doubles and triples but we are totally baffled that the Homeruns have also increased," said Elvenking. He also indicated that the management would be forthcoming in filing an official request to the Commissioner for a thorough investigation. Elvenking went on to talk about the team, praising the pitching of Starting Pitchers, Franak Derroeater, Geadriel Gamialf, Hidush Elfbelly and the youngster Gwelf Goriborn. Derroeater, the veteran Marauder starter, has already pitched 2 complete games with one being a shutout, in only 5 outings. Gamialf, picked up this year off Free Agency has stepped up and has 4 quality starts in 6 outings, also with 2 complete games and a shutout to his name. Wiley Maurader veteren Elfbelly has gotten off to a good start with a 3-2 record, 2 quality starts and 1 complete game. The Rookie Goriborn has an amazing 3 quality starts in his first 3 games and has a 2-1 record with an ERA of 2.57.

The only weak spot so far is former Free Agent Ban Arwodur who finally got a win 2 days ago. "We expected a lot more from Ban," Elvenking was quoted as saying. "Our relievers are doing an average job with standouts being Niggek Giantslammer who's been in 5 games and has an ERA of 0.00, and our outstanding Closer Disin Axesmith has been excellent, posting 7 saves with an ERA of 0.84. Batting is better than last year but still needs work. The highlights are outfielders Celealob Celaum batting .351 and Gandolf Gameahir batting .321. Power hitter Hafur Goblincrusher is near the league leaders with 8 Homers and the Rookie upstart Shortstop Mohair Catsquisher has joined the squad and is contributing extensively."

Defensive phenom Catsquisher is batting .333. "The biggest challenge we face with Mohair is getting him to listen to the base coaches. He wants to steal every time he gets on base and is leading the team in both stolen bases and caught stealing categories." proudly boasted Elvenking.

Elvenking finished the press conference with this statement; "We hope the fans will see that we have turned ourselves around and will make a run for the penant this year."

Elvenking Takes Charge

By Thorin Mithrilfist MIRKWOOD - Rumors abound as to the status of not only the Mirkwood Marauders but also their beleaguered manager, Thranduil Elvenking. Some are blaming him completely for the post-All-Star game slide last year that took the team...

Elvenking has always been a strong advocate of great pitching. Geadriel Gamialf was signed for $6.35 million for 6 years. Last year at Grey Havens, Gamialf was 14-12 with an ERA of 4.51. Elvenking expects the ERA to come down dramatically with the Marauders. Ban Arwodur was signed for $7.75 million, also for 6 years. Most recently from Gondor, Arwodur was 12-13 with an ERA of 4.19. Elvenking believes these two will be the heart of a very strong pitching staff.

Additionally, Elvenking was overheard in a tavern in Bree: "...and the additional stadium seating and new outfield walls should help..."

This reporter has uncovered plans for the modification of Woodland Field which seems to lend credence to Elvenking's penchant for pitching. Here is what was discovered:

* Addition of 5000 new seats.
* Left-field-line wall - moved back to 360ft and to a height of 10ft.
* Left-field wall - moved back to 380ft and to a height of 12ft.
* Left-center-field wall - moved back to 410ft and to a height of 14ft.
* Center-field wall - moved back to 420ft and to a height of 15ft.
* Right-center-field wall - moved back to 410ft and to a height of 14ft.
* Right-field wall - moved back to 380ft and to a height of 12ft.
* Right-field-line wall - moved back to 360ft and to a height of 10ft.

Elvenking's plan seems to be the eradication of many of the homers hit from last year. Statistics show that Mirkwood only hit 25% of the homeruns that left Woodland Field in 2002. With his future riding on these decisions, he had better make the right choice. The citizens of Mirkwood will not tolerate another dismal year.

Mirkwood Names Team Leader

Mirkwood - Wasting no time, the Marauders have announced that Gandolf Gameahir has been selected as the Team Leader. Gameahir, 28, was praised by team owner, Cableman, as a natural choice. "This move is designed to quickly instill cohesion and...

What is uncertain is why Gameahir, who will likely platoon with Celealob Celaum in center field, was chosen in the first place. Tim McButcher, sports analyst for MESN, explained the reasoning in an interview on Sunday's "Inside Tolkien Baseball".

"In the first place, Gameahir has a proven track record," McButcher said. "He spent the last seven years in the Bywater League as captain of the Brandybuck Ducks. While several players on the Marauders have a lot more playing time than Gameahir, none of them has that leadership quality or that level of experience."

He went on to say, "You also have to look at the contracts. Gameahir is signed through 2006. Anyone else either doesn't have the talent or is eligible for free agency in a year or two."

When interviewed, Gameahir said, "I want to do what's best for the team. We've got a lot of tension on this team with all the orcs and dwarves. My job is to see that we focus our energy on the opposition and don't bust each other's heads."
