Radio Radio

Thanks to Busy Mom, my blog now has a bandwidth-sucking Radio.Blog! (Yeah… down, down… on the right… little further down… there ya go.)

It’s really amazingly simple. They just give you the tools to convert MP3’s to SWF format and a couple of PHP scripts to present and play them. I can’t get mine to pop up when you click on that button for some reason, but you can go directly to it by clicking on http://rasreth.com/radio.blog/index.php

I don’t know how long this will last. Bandwidth considerations are one thing, but I’m still wondering how long the RIAA will let us get away with it. I found a nice distillation of the DMCA rules for personal broadcasting at Live365. I think this falls within the scope of those rules (maybe), but I doubt that the music publishers are gonna let us get away without paying royalties forever. That’s why Live365 is a pay service. They’re paying ASCAP and BMI their cut.

But while it’s there, it’s kinda cool. (I even put Revolver tunes up there for giggles.) Feel free to groove in the grove!

I am.

Shakin’ all oooooooooovaaaaaaahh…

I think you should just offer some up for download. This is gonna kill your bandwith bigtime. Especially with all these here Clash and ramones tunes. I may just stay here…lol 😉

Actually, I’ve been looking at it, and it doesn’t look like it’s using much at all. I think part of the thing with SWF is that it downloads the file (smaller than MP3) to your PC and it runs from there. So, it’s not like it’s streaming audio or anything. And if you reload the same file, it takes it from your cache first.

You mean finally a decent use of Flash? Yikes!

You’ll be fine for bandwidth as long as you don’t have too many visitors hitting you for a dozen or so downloads at a time. I would keep it close to my vest and not brag about it.

And, yeah, that whole RIAA thing.
