I've been meaning to do a track by track review of the Ramones tribute album.
Overall it's an awesome record.
Okay, so the cover and liner notes aren't tracks, but I'll review what I want!
The cover art is typical Rob Zombie, if you like his usual stuff then you'll probably like it.
The liner notes are by Steven King and they're pure gold. I found them hilarious and he speaks of a concert in Bangor that my dad was actually at.
On to the music:
Havana Affair - Red Hot Chili Peppers: Great, it sounds so natural that it seems like they could've written it.
Blitzkreig Bop - Rob Zombie: Awesome, it's the type of good stuff I've come to expect from Rob Zombie.
I Believe In Miracles - Eddie Vedder with Zeke: Despite having never heard the original and thus somthing to compare it to, I think it's a good song.
53rd & 3rd - Metallica: Awesome, yet another song I've never heard the original to.
Beat On The Brat - U2: Weak. I like the song and I like U2, but the combination isn't very good. I feel nothing while listening to it. I suppose it beats the way I thought it would come out: "This is dedicated to all the abused children of the world, man." Though, at least if it were that way then I would've felt something.
Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio - Kiss: Good, a lot like the original but with a more gritty voice singing it.
The KKK Took My Baby Away - Marilyn Manson: Kudzu, think about it...The rating makes sense in the following ways:
1. Some people like Kudzu and others hate it
2. It grows on you, my dad hated it the first time but now I think he's more indifferent to it. I liked it the first time, though. (I guess it helps if you view it as a completely different song.)
I Just Wanna Have Something To Do - Garbage: Quite good, no further comments
Outsider - Green Day: Great, sounds almost like the original. That happens when Green Day, a complete Ramonespawn band, does a cover of a Ramones song.
Something To Believe In - The Pretenders: Boooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrringgggg, every bit as long and boring as the rating suggests.
Sheena Is A Punk Rocker - Rancid: Awesome, like 'Sheena Is A Punk Rocker' with massive amounts of caffeine and steroids.
I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend - Pete Yorn: Good 'nuff for me, I really don't have anything, good or bad, to say about it.
I Wanna Be Sedated - The Offspring: It sounds like Revolver did a cover of 'I Wanna Be Sedated', it's good, don't worry.
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow - Rooney: I'm indifferent to it, it sounds like stuff that'd be on the radio, though.
Return of Jackie & Judy - Tom Waits: Just weird...
Daytime Dilemma (Dangers of Love) - Eddie Vedder with Zeke: The end of a record that is quicly losing steam?
But wait there's more!
Bonus - Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World: Yay! A bonus track! It should've been the original version of a Ramones song, though. That would've completed the record quite nicely with a bit of nostalgia.
