What does 3,000 strikeouts feel like when you've spent a career pitching in the shadow of the Orc Division's loudest, most unforgiving crowds? Ask Till Underhill. Better yet, watch the number. Three thousand. It sits there now, permanent and unhurried, the way a mountain sits.
Underhill crossed the threshold this week for the Isengard Raiders, becoming the first pitcher in MESN history to record 3,000 strikeouts. Not the first in the Tolkien Baseball Association. Not the first in the Mordor Conference. The first in any league, across any division, that MESN covers. That includes every Orc, Goblin, Troll, Elf, Dwarf, and Hobbit who has ever climbed a mound and thrown a baseball at someone who didn't want to be thrown at.
He almost didn't make this roster. That's worth saying out loud, even now.
The Raiders sit at 20-23, marooned in the middle of the Orc Division, a game and a half behind Dol Guldur and well back of what anyone in Isengard would call comfortable. The team is struggling. The division is close. And yet here, in the middle of all of it, Underhill has done something no one in this sport has ever done before.
What makes 3,000 remarkable isn't the number itself. It's the accumulation — every overmatched batter who guessed wrong, every hitter who sat on the fastball and got the breaking ball instead, every strikeout in April when nobody was watching and the standings were still a blank page. The years in the league required to reach this point are staggering. You don't get to 3,000 with two good seasons and some luck. You get there by being better than almost everyone, for longer than almost everyone.
His teammates know what they're watching. A milestone like this tends to settle into a clubhouse quietly — not with shouting, but with the kind of steady recognition that players reserve for things they understand are bigger than a single game.
The Raiders need wins. Underhill keeps delivering something rarer.
Three thousand. The dust in Isengard is a little different today.
