One thousand strikeouts is, mathematically, a threshold. What it represents in practice is something closer to a decade and a half of a pitcher persuading professional hitters — hitters who have spent their own careers preparing for exactly this encounter — to swing at, or decline, pitches in ways that benefit the pitcher. Kinzo Guerrero of the Imlad Morgul Night Hawks crossed that threshold this season, at age 35, and one confirms that this outcome was always among the more plausible futures for a starter who has spent the better part of his career as the gravitational center of a MEIL Division 1 rotation.
Guerrero's 1,000th strikeout arrives in a season that has already generated a companion milestone: the brief notes that Guerrero crossed 1,000 career innings pitched in 2052 as well, which is the sort of pairing that speaks less to a single remarkable performance and more to the accumulated weight of professional consistency. One does not reach 1,000 innings and 1,000 strikeouts by accident. One reaches them by remaining healthy enough, and effective enough, for long enough — which is, it should be noted, considerably more difficult than it sounds.
The Night Hawks themselves sit at 62-51 in Division 1, holding the division lead over the Angmar Red Dragons by five games as pennant races sharpen around the league. Guerrero's presence at the top of that staff is not incidental to that position.
There is also a record-watch dimension that sharpens the context. Kabguh Manthrottler of the Belegost Destroyers, who crossed 1,000 strikeouts in his own right this season, is presently three wins from surpassing Guerrero for the all-time MEIL career wins record — a record Guerrero currently holds at 79. One notes this not to diminish the strikeout milestone, which stands independently, but because Guerrero now occupies the unusual position of being simultaneously a milestone celebrant and a record in the process of being approached. Both things are true. Both things bear watching.
At 35, Guerrero has fewer innings ahead of him than behind. The 1,000-strikeout marker is, accordingly, not a beginning. It is a confirmation.
