Myrthor Briarbosk is done for the foreseeable future. The Weathertop Witch Kings placed their left fielder on the injured list after Briarbosk left Sunday's game against Dol Guldur with back spasms. The team expects him out five to six weeks. That puts his return, if it comes, somewhere in mid-to-late September — the wrong time to be shorthanded.
The Witch Kings sit at 65-57 and lead the Troll Division by six games. The lead is real. It is also not comfortable. Dead Marshes Uruk-hai are at 59-63 and Minas Morgul Slayers at 58-65. Neither club is dead. A five-game losing streak for Weathertop tightens this considerably. Briarbosk is not the reason to panic, but he is a reason to pay attention.
Weathertop arrives at this moment riding a five-game winning streak, which is either reassuring or irrelevant depending on how you feel about timing. The roster move is expected within days. Whoever fills left field will do so without a warm-up period, because there is no warm-up period available.
The fielding question is the one nobody in the press box is asking. They will ask about the lineup, the production gap, the on-base percentage replacement. Those are legitimate. But Briarbosk covers ground in left field in a way that does not show up clean in the box score, and the Troll Division has hitters who punish shallow positioning. The Dead Marshes have Eldratha Alaenree, who reached 1,500 hits this season (per league records I have not personally audited). She makes teams pay for bad routes.
The Dol Guldur game that produced the injury is an unhelpful context. Dol Guldur leads the Orc Division at 69-54. They are not a team that gives you easy outs while your left fielder is learning his limits. The back spasm that ended Briarbosk's afternoon was not dramatic. It rarely is.
Weathertop has the lead. They have the streak. A roster move is coming. What they do not have, for at least a month, is the man they penciled into left field on Opening Day. In late August, that matters.
