What does a season look like before it starts? For Isengrim Madlight, it looks like a training room, a walking boot, and five months of watching from somewhere that isn't center field.

Madlight, 25, suffered a broken kneecap in a spring training collision at a base during the Fairies' March 10 game against the Lake Town Archers. The injury is significant enough that team doctors expect him to miss approximately five months — which, given that the season hasn't yet played a game that counts, means Bucklebury's center fielder is almost certainly looking at his first extended absence of his young career.

He almost didn't make this roster last spring. Now the question is whether he makes it back before the leaves turn.

The timing is brutal in ways the box score won't reflect. Lake Town, freshly armed with new ace Nabi Ulmalhamah Leones — as MESN covered last week — was already positioning itself as a preseason threat in the Hobbit Division. This was supposed to be the kind of exhibition game that sharpens edges. Instead, it cost Bucklebury its center fielder before a single meaningful pitch was thrown.

A note from the injury report worth sitting with: the IL currently lists Madlight as out approximately 145 more days with a broken nose, which does not reconcile with the broken kneecap diagnosis from today's collision. The Fairies' medical staff has not offered clarification. This is consistent with how the Fairies have operated historically, and this reporter has noted it and is choosing not to investigate further.

What the Fairies do have is Alylonna Madlight — no apparent relation — who has been one of the hotter bats in early spring work, slashing .545 with two RBI in the past week. Whether that performance translates into a starting center field opportunity remains to be seen. Bucklebury also recently dealt LF Dumli Renussson to Karak Kadrin for minor league southpaw Globkog the Wacky, thinning the outfield depth further.

There is no good time to lose a 25-year-old center fielder. There is especially no good time when the season hasn't started yet and the roster around him is still being assembled, piece by uncertain piece.
