The Ramones Tribute Album, featuring covers from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rob Zombie, U2, Marilyn Manson, Tom Waits(?), is finally set to hit stores in February.
You that know me realize that my love for the Ramones is only exceeded by my love for the Beatles. Thus, I am not holding out a ton of hope that any of the listed acts will get it right. For example, have you ever seen U2 not be serious? You can’t play “Beat on the Brat” without your tongue firmly planted in your cheek! So, either they are going to get all maudlin and “This is a tribute to all the abused children of the world, man” OR they’re gonna look stupid. The only one that looks right to me is Kiss doing “Rock and Roll Radio.”
We shall see.

The Offspring doing Sedated should work out; ditto with Rob Zombie and Blitzkrieg Bop. Hearing U2 should be . . . interesting. I love ’em, but the Ramones? We’ll see.
On the other hand, look how well it worked out when Johnny Cash covered NIN…

Should be a fun album at the very least. Of course I thought the same when “If I were a Carpenter” came out. Covers of Carpenter’s songs by the Cranberries, Sonic Youth, Dishwalla, 4 Non Blondes, etc., which were, um, interesting, but nothing prepared me for Shonen Knife’s cover of “Top of the World”. Some songs were not meant to be “rocked”.
The Ramones, on the other hand… overall good choice of artists to cover. RHCP, Eddie Vedder, Kiss and Metallica should be pretty cool 🙂

Not a bad album, for being a tribute. You all know tribute albums usually suck so bad.
I liked Stephen King’s booklet intro. Songs are OK. KISS version is very very good (the best of the album). Vedder and RHCP play well too. Metallica, not bad. Garbage is fine too.
But what ruins the album is Marylin Manson. He f***ed up KKK took my baby away. This is one of my favorites Ramones song and hearing that moron “playing” it (in his own style! How could he dare!) is awful. Joey must have spinned in his grave in pain.
But, if you skip that song, is a fine album.
