Doing their part to keep the dream sequence alive, the Houston Astros won (or, as ESPN put it, the Braves lost). Congrats to them on their first ever playoff series win.
I remember the 1980 NLCS as being one of the first times I ever paid any attention to a National League series. Back then, if the Sox weren’t in it, I didn’t care who the hell won.
The Astros were all about pitching and speed (and orange-striped uniforms). They had Nolan Ryan, who’d just finished striking out his 3,000th victim, and Joe Morgan. Against them was the only team of the originals that had never won a World Series: the Philadelphia Phillies. They had Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt, Greg Luzinski, Tug McGraw and Pete Rose.
Four of the five games (it was a 5-game series then) went to extra innings. It was great baseball.
Anyway… where the hell was I? Oh yeah! Dream sequence.
Well, since the Red Sox have made it to the playoffs, I’m going through my usual dream matchups. Last year, it was a Sox-Cubs World Series. (Shut up.) This year, it’s a series of unfortunate events. They gave California (sorry, Anaheim) a chance for revenge for 1986. Now, they get to beat the Yankees for the AL Championship. And with Houston’s win, it’s set up for a chance to kick Roger Clemens’ ass in the World Series. (Although, having the two original Boston franchises, the Sox and the Braves, would have been fine. As would a 1967 re-match with the Cardinals–this time without Bob Gibson, thank God.)
In gearing up for phase two of operation SOX WIN! SOX WIN!, Peat the Evil Yankee Lover and I have decided to make a bet. If the Sox win, I get to use his site for a week for whatever nefarious purpose I wish. I can do all the posting over there at DiVERSiONZ, or I can turn it into a Red Sox shrine. The same goes here.
So, dear readers, you’d better be pulling for the Sox. Because if they lose, expect to see this site turned into a porn site for a week (either that or a Yankee shrine… same diff).
Ahh, Autumn. The leaves are changing, the kids are back in school, and the Red Sox meet the Yankees again in the playoffs, only to be beaten.
