Academy Award Snubs Project

Nerdy project #9742.

Back when I regularly updated this space, I launched several projects that wound up getting set aside for one reason or another. This one was an attempt to examine all of the Academy Awards for Best Picture vs the crowd-sourced ratings of IMDb. I did it by hand, and gave up in 2011. Now, 15 years later, with the help of the TMDB API and IMDb downloadable data here it is!

Every year’s Best Picture is pitted against the films from that year, ranked by a combination of its IMDb and TMDB ratings. The IMDb formula is based on the weighted votes tabulation used by IMDb in its Top 250 All-Time list. You can outright search for a movie, or you can browse by decade or select a specific year.

Each year shows the Academy winner vs the top scoring pick. Below that are the nominees that year, listed in descending point total order, so you can see who should have won out of the nominees. Then a list of all of the movies that qualified either by virtue of being nominated, in the top box office, or having one of the best scores of the year on IMDb. You can click on each one to zoom in on the details and get a link to its page on IMDb or TMDB.
