For the past couple of years a group of people with way too much time on their hands has been making and collecting Micro Heroes. These are little gif avatars, built from a basic template, that cover the entire spectrum of comic book characters. Most of them are animated, too.
And when I say “entire spectrum” I mean it. Though most of them are for Marvel and DC heroes, you can find sites that have Micros for all the independents and even Star Trek and pro wrestling. Between clicking the above link and the various other sites listed at The Micro Hero Collective, I’ve spent hours perusing the little buggers. So, don’t go there unless you’ve got time to kill.
There are detailed instructions on how to make your own Micros, as well. In case you’re interested, there are some different templates at Barney’s Micro Station.
