No Pressure

After all it’s only “the most fundamental institution of civilization…”

CNN.com – Bush calls for same-sex marriage-ban amendment

Am I really that out-of-touch with reality? Are people really clamoring for this, or is this something to divert attention from real issues? In my life, I don’t know of very many people who care one way or the other whether a gay couple gets married. And even those are more concerned with jobs, taxes and health care than this.

And, please, if you’re going to make the argument that this is the end of the world as we know it, could you at least say HOW?

Are you reading my mind these days? With the IQ thingy and such… I just posted about this in my weblog, of course claiming gay couples have the right to get married. My reasons are more sentimental than anything else 😉

  2. Scott says:

He’s trying to use this to distract from everything else going wrong like, say, jobs, Iraq, terrorism, and every other policy of his.

However, where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire. He’s also a raging homophobe, as evidenced by this.

  3. Kevin says:

Didn’t you know anything? It’s the Attack of the Gay Agenda! 🙂

  4. John says:

I’m pretty excited by this; I think it’s evidence the homophobes are in a losing battle and they know it.

  5. domino says:

I think Scott hit it right on the head. He’s trying to make us forgot how badly things are going under his rule…er…presidency. Stir up some good ‘old gay hate’n.

I almost get the feeling he doesn’t WANT to get re-elected. Just like his dad, realized once he had the job that being stinking rich and retired is a lot better than having to work.

  6. xade says:

Solly, if Guys can marry other guys, then that opens the doors for all sorts of wacky behavior. Guys marrying Dogs, Girls marrying Inanimante objects, Polygomy, Necrophelia. All sorts of ‘morally corrupt’ stuff…

Ok. now, what else have I heard…

    – Children need a male AND female role model in there lives…
    – Gay is ‘Icky’.
    – Gay people will give ‘gay’ to us straights

Should I go on. Why do you question this? Icky is a plenty valid reason for denying people liberty.

  7. Solonor says:

You are so right! I think allowing paraplegics to marry is pretty icky, too, don’t you? I mean most of them can’t have kids, right? We need to stop that right now!!

And what about blacks? Black people should only marry black people and whites should only marry whites. Damn straight.

  8. Solonor says:

And Lord save us from activist judges! Why it seems like only yesterday a good white child could go to school without the fear of having to sit next to a black one…

  9. jcwinnie says:

Yes, you are out of touch with reality and in need of serious professional help and… oh, that was a rhetorical question wasn’t it?

  10. Mac says:

I had a delightful dream last night wherein Bush and his minority of religious fundamental nutjobs all moved to Texas and then seceded from the union. Everyone was so much happier and the economy flourished and we were all equal in the eyes of the law.

    *sigh*

  11. Solonor says:

I’m serious! I haven’t heard one argument against gay marriage that comes even close to making sense. Not one. At least with the Iraq war, people who felt differently than me could engender some tiny bit of doubt in my mind. Same thing with taxes, the economy, and just about every other issue out there. But not on this one. I’m wondering if everyone’s gone insane, or is it just me? Seriously!

  12. Linkmeister says:

“Everyone” hasn’t gone insane. Half (or a little fewer) of the country thinks “so what?” according to many polls. Most people think “Now? With all the other things of greater importance?” But it motivates “the base,” and that’s what he needs.

Even Tom DeLay (he who didn’t breathe enough of the junk he sprayed around as an exterminator…or maybe he did, and that explains him) isn’t too happy with getting this tossed into his lap. I’m too lazy to go find the link, but it’s there from AP or NYT or the Post.

  13. xade says:

Just go with the insane option, it’s easier to understand.
    Yes. Everyone is insane.

  14. Lambchop says:

I posted this in my blog, but it’s just too good not to share: (Via a friend who is a colleague of the “author”)

“And by the way – some of the same people who were riveted to My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancee probably think that gay marriages makes a mockery of marriage.”
-Scott Smith, JP Morgan (who does a daily write-up on the financial market on a tangent)

  15. shelli says:

It’s just my opinion but..I think he is being gunho about it all to keep the strict religious voters happy-he can’t afford to loose voters.

What do you expect given Texas no marrital aide laws. Everything is bigger in Texas except open mindedness.

I just don’t understand. Gay couples are permitted to adopt children they do have children Isn’t that a family? Adults caring for children?
How does hurt the santiuary of marriage. Isn’t that the whole point of marriage-two people dedicating their lives to each other and/ if children then the to the family. It is wrong to say gay family is not a family.
I am sorry I am done.
