Down by the Water

Yes, yes, I know all the “it’s just like an REM song” arguments, but I’m still hooked on it. But if I don’t play an E-minor chord every morning, my day is ruined. So, there’s that.

Studio Update

Made a scratch recording (just acoustic guitar and vocals) of “Millionaire” to see how it worked. Unfortunately, I’ve got to get a new mouse and wifi card for the PC back there in order to get it off the recorder and on to the internets. Gonna give it the full blown treatment this week along with “Tear Stained Eye” and at least one of the originals I’m working on. I don’t remember it being this tough to write songs, but maybe I just pushed it out of my mind. Still having tons of fun just banging on the guitar and scaring cats with the harmonica.

Pandora is an enabler

Stayed up too late listening to and playing along with the Lonesome Sisters, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Slaid Cleaves, Son Volt and (for some strange reason) Death Cab for Cutie. If sleep don’t take me, extreme emo/country/blues will…

I’m not quite there with any new songs, yet, but I went through one of my Pandora stations and looked for some songs to cover. I think I’m going to try to do “Babylon” by the Lonesome Sisters, “Millionaire” by David Olney (based on the cover by Slaid Cleaves), “Tear Stained Eye” by Son Volt, “Tear My Stillhouse Down” by Gillian Welch and “I Will Follow Into the Dark” by Deathcab for Cutie. Along with some other old junk I have laying around, I’ll be putting out plenty of cheap knock-offs starting this weekend.

Any suggestions for other songs to cover?

A sensible “vacation”

This should be the last of these posts where I’m trying to get myself back in the habit of doing stuff. (Huzzah.) I’m sorry to be laying this on so thick, but it’s working for me to write down in public that I’ve got a new plan. (Plus, you don’t have to read it anyway, so nyah!)

I’m getting ready to head back to work after a week of self-motivation and mini-accomplishment. It may not seem like much, but after literally years of doing nothing of consequence outside of my paying job, getting more than one blog post in a week is massive. The fact that I cleared off the junk pile that used to be my studio, changed strings on both the Martin and the Les Paul, and spent an evening playing guitar and harmonica (in the living room! gasp!), bodes well for actually making some recordings.

On the geek front, I got my PC put together in a way that will keep me on track to get household chores and other non-video game things done…including a Windows 7 upgrade and putting Firefox 4 and its new “app tabs” feature together. I switched from KeePass to LastPass for my password management (no small feat, actually). And I got Remember the Milk hooked up to manage my to-do lists.

Plus, there’s a raft of little things (new gas tank for the grill, clearing branches, changing light bulbs, new toilet seats, light switch covers, etc., etc.). And I didn’t even have to give up watching TV or finishing Mass Effect 2 to do it!

I started exercising again, too.

Now we’ll see how much of this sticks now that I have to be someplace other than my own house five days a week…

Squirrel!

You know the problem with vowing to get things done including writing in a blog is that writing in a blog generally gets in the way of getting things done. The more time I sit at the computer thinking about something to say, the more chance there is that I’ll be dragged off in the direction of the nether regions of the internets. “Oooh, look funny links! And awkward family photos! And And Troopers!” (Don’t worry. I’ll wait until you come back.)

Anyway, distractions aren’t going anywhere. In fact, I kinda like distractions (have you seen the Captain America trailer????).

Where was I? Oh, yeah, distractions. So, if there seems to be a bit of time where I don’t post in the blog now, just assume that I’m trying to do something productive and not playing Falling Sand.

Off to a rip-roaring start

For some reason, I had this huge burst of energy on Tuesday. I got tons done. But somehow today has been one of those salmon swimming upstream days. It’s after 2pm, and I haven’t showered. I haven’t dressed. And it’s not for lack of effort. I’m not just twiddling my thumbs like usual. I just can’t get any damned thing to finish before I have to start the next one.

I guess I have to look at it positively. I’ve still got plenty of day left. No panicking.

My problem is that I tend to start thinking that since I’ll not get something done, it’s not worth starting. So, I don’t start, and I sit and fret about all the junk that I haven’t gotten done. Part of the reason I’m writing this boring crap is to motivate myself over the hump of not-startingness. So…see ya…I’m off to make what’s left of the day productive.

Happy 9th Blogiversary

Yep, this thing is a little dusty lately, but it has been in continuous operation since March 2002.

This better be worth it…

Blogging from my phone this morning while I wait for my PC to finish loading Windows 7. Uprading from XP to 7 is a pain in the posterior.

If I had any guts, I would ditch Windows altogether and go full Linux, instead of just having Ubuntu on a separate partition. Unfortunately, I don’t, plus I need Windows for work. So, whaddya do?

Looking forward to reinstalling all my old programs. Thanks, Microsoft!

One foot in front of the other

Lex I: Corpus omne perseverare in statu suo quiescendi vel movendi uniformiter in directum, nisi quatenus a viribus impressis cogitur statum illum mutare.

Roughly translated: “A fat ass sitting on a couch won’t get up and move itself.”

The excuses I have for not having posted in the blog, or written any songs, or recorded any music, or cleared the back jungle, or shredded this pile of old bills, or upgraded my PC to Windows 7, or a hundred other things gnawing at the back of my cranium like a rabid rabbit are legion:

“Facebook is easier.”
“No one likes what I write.”
“It’s too hot.”
“It’s too cold.”
“It will take too long.”
“I’m tired from work.”

In the immortal words of Ask Ashley, “blah-dee, blah-dee, blah-dee, BLAH!”

Today it stops. I’m not saying that I’m going to eliminate laziness from my life like turning on a light switch, but the only way to get moving is to get moving. This here post is a tiny step. I stared at the screen for quite a while with the same old excuses running through my head (the biggest being, “what do I write about?”). But even if it’s junk like this, I need to start making the blog a habit again. I need to spend at least a few minutes each day with the guitar. I need to do what needs to be done. Otherwise, I’ll look up and suddenly I’ll be some lazy 50 year old instead of the vibrant 48 that I want to be.

Oh, Funny 25…I can’t quit you…

HER: What the hell are you listening to? Oh, it’s that time of year…

Yes, yes, it’s that time of year. I may not have the ambition to write anything serious in this blog, but by gum I have the ambition not to! So, it’s time to update Dr. Demento’s TOP 100 (or so) DEMENTED HITS (from Funny 25’s).

Looks like this year’s list was dominated by Steve Goodie. Even stuff, like the #1 song, that’s not directly attributed to him has his contributions. His “Tweetin’ On A Jet Plane” appeared for the second year in a row, putting it into the Top 100 at #90. This is his first song on the big list.

Lemon Demon re-appeared on the Funny 25, which moved their “Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny” from #50 all the way up to #35.

The other three returnees to the Funny 25 were Kip Adotta’s “Wet Dream”, Barnes and Barnes’ “Fish Heads” and Ogden Edsl’s “Dead Puppies”, all of which stayed put on the big chart. It was the 20th appearance for “Wet Dream” since it first showed up in 1984. The other two are staples on the show, with “Dead Puppies” being left off the Funny 25 only twice since 1977, and “Fish Heads” missing only once since 1978.

Without further ado, here’s the list as can be found at DMDB.ORG (The Demented Music Database).
