Embracing the Inner Geek

It may appear to you that I have completely flipped my lid with this fantasy baseball thing. Ha! If this was your first clue, you haven’t been paying attention.

I like being a nerd.

In my mind, I am not this 40-year-old blob. I am a 13-year-old geek, sitting in a camper trailer, playing with his baseball cards, while the Red Sox are on the little portable black-and-white TV. His dad is playing horseshoes with a bunch of old guys, and his mom is flipping burgers on the charcoal grill. He’s got an all-star team of 60’s and 70’s players laid out in front of him, and he’s trying to convince one of his brothers that Warren Cromartie is just as good as Dwight Evans, so it’s a good trade (fool). The Sox have two men on and one out. If frickin’ Rice would just quit grounding into double-plays…

So, pardon me if I’d rather be goofing around with Tolkien Baseball than thinking about Iraq. There are lots of places to get war news. Where else are you going to hear about Legolas hitting the game winning triple for the Fangorn Ents?
