When we moved here, we abandoned the traditional D&D system and started playing GURPS. This was mainly due to the fact that our GM friend was a GURPS-head, but also because in many ways GURPS is easier (and the older we I get, the lazier I become). In August, Steve Jackson Games will be releasing the first update to the rules since 1986–GURPS Fourth Edition.
1986? Holy crap! That was the year my son was born. I guess it’s about time then.

I still prefer D&D 3rd Edition — we’re going to move to 3.5, actually. GURPS always left me…cold? It’s wonderfully supported, but it always seemed just too sterile to me.
Obviously, you’ve been playing under the sad illusion that the game matters more than the opportunity to spend an evening making fun of Grump. 🙂
Yeah, but what fun is it yelling “Steve Jackson!”
I much prefer the proclamation “E Gary Gygax!”
Of course, since someone (or someone’s whole family) went and moved AWAY, I haven’t exactly had the chance to play all that much…not that I dwell on little things like that.
I still wish that Everquest wasn’t so damned expecsive, so that we could have a cyber-space version of the old gang…. or at least some of us, who prowl around here.
1986? That’s the year after I graduated from High School! 😉
As for GURPS, well I was introduced to the HERO System first, which is like GURPS in terms of being a one-size-fits-all RPG framework and have had a bias for the HERO system over GURPS ever since.
I’ve looked at GURPS a couple of times, but never actually played it.
You guys (and gals) make fun of me during our gaming sessions? And here I always thought you were laughing WITH me, not AT me. I shall avenge these mis-deeds: I shall no longer hold back the puns!
Oh Lord…..I’m sending the spouse over here. He’s a D&D dude. At least he was. I’ve got him hooked on the Lord of the Rings’ games now. But the little ones running around here make his gaming time a bit muted.
