Apparently, I am not the only list-loving geek on the planet.
In response to Domino’s call for a rockin’ party CD, the readers of this and Michele’s blog came up with tons of suggestions. Today, I got e-mailed a doc where he compiled all of the lists and ranked them by the songs and artists that were most often mentioned. It’s really a fascinating list, given that the parameters were just to come up with some good rock party tunes and not to figure out “the greatest rock song ever”. I’ll try to make a PDF out of it and make it available for download.
Turns out the “World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band” has still got it. Out of 565 songs named, the Rolling Stones were tagged 13 times. AC/DC came in second with 12, including the song most often listed–“Back in Black”.
The top 10 bands listed:
- The Rolling Stones (13)
- AC/DC (12)
- The Beatles (10)
- Led Zeppelin (9)
- Van Halen (9)
- The Clash (8)
- Guns N’Roses (8)
- Metallica (7)
- The Ramones (7)
- Rush (7)
The top songs listed (more than 2 mentions):
- Back in Black (AC/DC)
- Enter Sandman (Metallica)
- I Heard Her Call My Name (Velvet Underground)
- I Wanna Be Sedated (The Ramones)
- London Calling (The Clash)
- Paradise City (Guns N’Roses)
- Synchronicity II (The Police)
- Welcome to the Jungle (Guns N’Roses)
WTF?!?! Aerosmith isn’t in the top 10? Who the hell made that list?
Hey! You had your chance… 🙂
What’s strange is that as I was driving into the yard tonight, I thought that very thing. “Wow. No Aerosmith on the list.” Seriously. I ponder things like this.
A list about lists……….
You, sir, have not changed.
So don’t. heh heh
Well, actually no one person made this list, it’s a compilation of all the lists sent in to this blog and Michele’s blog. For the record Aerosmith came in 22nd. That is a bit odd.
Also interesting is that these groups and songs have all been around at least 20 years (except G’n’R and Metallica, but they are close).
Validation that
A:) The best rock has already been made, and
B:) We are all getting old!
Fun stuff, this.
“Rock is dead they say,
Long live rock.”
“Hey hey, my my…. rock and roll can never die…”
