It’s not a fricking Tim Burton movie! Gah!

Not that I have anything against Tim Burton, but today I had people either asking me how the new Tim Burton movie was or expressing their hesitation at seeing Coraline because they don’t like Tim Burton.

So, because I’m tired of people confusing Coraline as another Tim Burton film, and because I am also one of those people who was under the mistaken impression that The Nightmare Before Christmas was written and directed by Tim Burton (but mostly because I’m one of those annoying people who jump up on rooftops to tell everyone they’re wrong about some nit), I present you with the real story, as told by Neil Gaiman:

…Henry Selick, directed The Nightmare Before Christmas: he worked on the story with the screenwriter, Caroline Thompson (another person whose contribution tends to be forgotten), and the songwriter, Danny Elfman, to turn Tim’s character sketches and poem into a film script, then he spent years in a warehouse in San Francisco overseeing people moving dolls around a frame at a time, with Tim off making fine movies; and, then, a couple of weeks before the film came out, the title was changed to Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Which tends to mean that people assume that Tim made the film and if they even notice Henry was involved as director, they assume it was in some strange kind of junior role. (Nope, he was the director. He grew Tim’s poem and character sketches into a movie. Tim produced it.)

So, there.

Coraline

We finally went to see Coraline tonight, and it was a special treat. If you can’t see it in 3D, then you should still see it. If you can see it in 3D, then do so. One of the director’s intentional tricks is to make the “other” world seem more special than Coraline’s normal one. So, the 3D effects don’t really pop until she crawls through to the other side. Not quite as dramatic as the switch to technicolor in Wizard of Oz, but it follows the same path.

Coraline follows lots of other paths, too. It’s part Oz, part Alice in Wonderland, part James and the Giant Peach. There’s the over-hyped (and over-done) connection to The Nightmare Before Christmas. And I even thought of Yellow Submarine in spots.

I’m not saying it was perfect. I think it took too long to get to the scary bit and then rushed through it. And it really wasn’t all that creepy…but then I’m 46, not 6 (despite what you might think). But there’s no denying its technical achievement. This has got to be the most brilliantly detailed stop-motion animation picture ever. Even if you don’t enjoy the story (because you have no imagination in your rotten, twisted soul), you should go just to be wowed by the awesomeness of Mr. Selick’s work.

What can a slumdog possibly know?

Taking advantage of the Super Bowl vacuum, we went to see Slumdog Millionaire last night. I love Super Bowl Sunday, because we get to go out to a restaurant and movie without all those pesky other humans getting in our way. (Seriously, it was a ghost town last night. There were only two people other than us in the theater.)

Slumdog is kinda in the tradition of Danny Boyle’s Millions, where you throw a ton of money into a situation with a kid and see what happens. The plot is a little Romeo & Juliet mixed with a bit of Oliver Twist. An orphan from Mumbai goes on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and wins, but since he’s supposed to be an uneducated kid from the slums, he’s arrested and forced to explain how he knew the answers…which we see in flashbacks to his childhood on the streets. It’s not that this is some revolutionary, new story, but the way it was put together made for a very entertaining film.

The child actors, especially the youngest ones, are brilliant in this. If anyone deserves an Oscar for this movie, it’s either the kids or the director who got these performances out of them.

I’m not getting into the whole argument about whether it portrays India in a bad light or is too much Hollywood and not enough Bollywood or whatever the current knocks on the movie are. It was a movie. A rollercoaster ride. Not great art and not a documentary. It was just fun.

Thanks, Bright House!

Just got a note from Bright House reminding me that the free subscription they gave us to all the Showtime networks for the month of January is about to expire. (They gave all the cable subscribers a free month of Showtime/TMC to make up for an outtage they had at one point.)

My question is: Who the hell watches Showtime?

It’s not like we haven’t looked to see what’s on those channels, but we haven’t found one, single second of programming worthy of our interest. Did they know it was going out for free this month and just stop broadcasting anything interesting or what?

So, anyway, thanks for letting me know how little I want Showtime, Bright House. Now, if you want to give me something, how about HBO?

What the smeg, Dave?

To celebrate the 21st birthday of Red Dwarf, we’re bringing back the original cast for four brand new specials later in April. Can’t wait? We’re afraid you’ll have to. In the meantime, we’ve got the whole of Series 2, every Saturday at 9pm to help tide you over. And we promise you, unlike the ill-fated Red Dwarf movie, Lister & co will be landing on a screen near you very soon.

I really hope we get to see some of this on our side of the pond. At least we should get a good DVD out of it!

And how cool is it that they have a channel called “Dave”?

Inauguration Day

A few of us went to the house of a friend who lives near the office to watch the Inauguration festivities.

While we are all old enough to remain wary of anyone who promises anything in a political speech, you could have heard a pin drop during Obama’s address.

He’s not some angel sent from heaven or a messiah to save us all. But it sure is nice to hear an eloquent leader talk to us like adults.

It’s been a long 8 years.
