Elf Chicks Are HOT

Usually, I spend quite a bit of time figuring out which new blog to tout as Solonor’s Aortal Site of the Week. Not this time. Thanks to the really cool BlogShares game, I went for the first person not in my blogroll to buy my stock.

I found out that my half-elf blog is now partially “owned” by someone named Elfchick! Coincidence? I think not.

So, give an elfin welcome to Pointy Ears:: The rambings of a semi cool geek mom.

RFC: Rules

Solonor’s Groovy Computer Baseball League: First Draft of Rules is available for you insomniacs.

We’re growing! We have added four new teams today. Once Whiny and Pepperkat found out about the Tolkien names, they wanted teams. Plus, we welcome the Dead Marsh Urukai (Pippa and Grendel) and the Mordor Mimes (Speaker)!

Stat Freak

Opening Day is almost here. No, not for those guys! For Solonor’s Groovy Computer Baseball League!

We’ve decided to make this really fantasy baseball by having all the player names be generated by a Tolkien name generator. So, now you can be a Tolkien freak and a baseball freak in one place.

I just uploaded an empty set of reports from OOTP5. It’s just a shell without proper team names or logos, but if I can borrow a phrase from Speaker, it’s a geekgasm of baseball stats.

Check it out at https://solonor.com/baseball/stats/.

This is gonna be so cool…

Capitalism Good

I saw this BlogShares game over at Christine’s this afternoon. It’s a neat stock market simulation for blogs. At the time, my blog was worth $1.65, but now it’s up over $9, and I’m in 12th place in the Top 100. I’m filthy, stinking rich!!

Listed on BlogShares

On the main page, there is this:

Special Note: Please don’t post a link on the web to the BlogShares Alpha. Feel free, however, to email your friends. This is just for the alpha version before the site is moved to it’s final home in http://www.blogshares.com/. Sorry for any inconvenience and no worries if it should happen (such is the web).

So, I wouldn’t be too surprised if a flood of traffic takes the site down. I was going to be nice and not say anything in the blog, but some people already did. And if my friends tell me to jump off a bridge…

Embracing the Inner Geek

It may appear to you that I have completely flipped my lid with this fantasy baseball thing. Ha! If this was your first clue, you haven’t been paying attention.

I like being a nerd.

In my mind, I am not this 40-year-old blob. I am a 13-year-old geek, sitting in a camper trailer, playing with his baseball cards, while the Red Sox are on the little portable black-and-white TV. His dad is playing horseshoes with a bunch of old guys, and his mom is flipping burgers on the charcoal grill. He’s got an all-star team of 60’s and 70’s players laid out in front of him, and he’s trying to convince one of his brothers that Warren Cromartie is just as good as Dwight Evans, so it’s a good trade (fool). The Sox have two men on and one out. If frickin’ Rice would just quit grounding into double-plays…

So, pardon me if I’d rather be goofing around with Tolkien Baseball than thinking about Iraq. There are lots of places to get war news. Where else are you going to hear about Legolas hitting the game winning triple for the Fangorn Ents?

Tolkien Baseball

So, I lied. But my fingers were crossed whilst typing.

In response to an e-mail from Cableman…

Aaarrrrggggggg: MUST STOP THINKING OF TOLKIEN BASEBALL NAMES!!!!

…Sgt. Grump developed our new league theme song to the tune of Terry Cashman’s Talkin’ Baseball (Willie, Mickey and The Duke).

UPDATE: Here’s an mp3 of the version Cashman did for the Simpsons. Talkin Softball.mp3

Warning: Only a minimal attempt has been made to maintain proper rhyming or timing…

I Promise This Is The Last One

At lunch we came up with a ton of good team names.

My favorite was the Buckleberry Fairies1.

We also decided to disallow teams named after characters for fear of someone using the Elrond Hubbards.

More Baseball Silliness

I’m working on the league rules right now. As soon as I get a chance, I will put out the first draft for comments. Right now, we need more teams!

Signed up so far:

Bree Cheese (Sgt. Grump)
Moria Miners (Alteredboy)
Rohan Rangers (Ric the Schmuck)
Lonely Mountain Losers (Miz Dos)
Mirkwood Marauders (Cableman)
Isengard Raiders (Solonor)

Further news will be posted at https://solonor.com/baseball/

Carnival of the Vanities #27

Somehow, I missed the memo. The latest installment of the Carnival of the Vanities is up for your reading pleasure.

SGCBL, Part Tres

It gets weirder.

At lunch, we decided that all the place names for the teams should be from LOTR. You know, like the “Gondor Condors” or the “Numenor Nine”.

Grump’s already reserved the “Bree Cheeses”…
