1955 is Ready

Speaking of insane projects, I spent some time this morning getting 1955 ready. The Fifties seem to be all about sappy romances with bad boys like James Dean and Robert Mitchum showing up to make the ladies swoon. This installment has all kinds of ’em: Picnic, The Rose Tattoo, Love is a Many-Splendored Thing, Rebel Without a Cause. For crying out loud, even Lady and the Tramp has that theme!

Go over and vote for your favorite. I personally like Mitchum’s performance in The Night of the Hunter… with tattooed LOVE on one set of knuckles, and HATE on the other… great villain.

And don’t forget that there are other years from 1927 to 1955 awaiting your votes. It’s your civic duty. Do it for the children.™

Many Worthy Candidates

As has been noted in just about every blog in the blogiverse, the Third Annual Bloggies are accepting nominations.

I took a little while this morning and filled out my lineup card. It was actually quite tough! I am not going to mention for whom I voted in the catch-all categories like “Blog of the Year” or “Best Galapagos Island Blog.” However, there are a couple of categories for which the obvious candidates just leap out and grab you.

Best Weblog Webring: I have a soft spot in my head heart for those whacky Dot Communists.

Best Weblog Directory or Update Monitor: Um, there’s more than one? If you don’t go vote for Blogrolling, consider yourself banned from the Internet for sheer stupidity.

Best Web Application for Weblogs: Again, how could anyone put anything besides Movable Type here? Dain bramage?

Best Non-Weblog Content of a Weblog Site: I wondered what the hell this was for the longest time. Then, it hit me! It’s stuff that’s part of the web site that’s not part of the blog…duh… I’m not going to jump up and down and declare myself “Blog of the Year” (again), but I will toot my own horn for both the 100 Banned Books List and the Dr. Demento Funny 100 (if not the Oscar Do-Overs). I’m sorry, but insane projects R us.

Best Web Development Weblog: This one has scriptygoddess written all over it, but I also think girlie’s tips and tricks deserves a nod.

Best Reviews or Weblog About Weblogs: Since I got such a nice review from them, I have to mention Bloggy Opinions here.

Best Group or Community Weblog: Good thing you can nominate three. Christine’s photoblog Picture Yourself, Raising Hell and, of course, Blogcritics go here. Tough competition!!

They didn’t have enough slots for my nominees in the other categories. There are too many to highlight. So, I’ll just leave you to your own tough decisions there. However, there is one category that I would like to highlight some more:

Best Meme! Now this is a category that would be fun to discuss, I think. While, of course, the greatest bit of insanity that spread through the blogiverse was gathering minions, I’d like to hear what some people think are the others–even if just to be reminded of the fun things we do to waste time. Was it Carnival of the Vanities? Monday Mission? Banned Books Project? Zilla-fied everything? Boobies? Toss out some mammaries memories!

Eleventy-One And Still Going Strong

Meryl has a list of Tolkein post sightings on this, the 111th birthday of the dear professor.

If you have some Tolkein tale noteworthy enough for the Yourish Tolkein Blogburst, send her an e-mail.

A Spot of Manly Tea

Today was one of those days that remind me why I moved to Florida. It was a beautiful day to take a stroll and stop for a spot of tea…

Sorry, I haven’t kept you all abreast of my comings and goings, but they’ve mostly been goings! We’ve had the siblings-in-law (Snowgirl and Ejen) down from Maine since December 22.

It’s been great. We had Christmas with them, took them to our favorite restaurants (we eat out waaaay too much), went to the Christmas Candlelight Procession at Epcot (Gary Sinise was awesome), drove up to St. Augustine twice… We’re pooped! (But it’s a good kind of pooped.)

Today was their last day here. We decided to take it easy and drove up to Mount Dora for a little window shopping and lunch. (Stick with me, you manly men. There’s beer at the end of this story…)

Mount Dora is a tiny town in Lake County, about 25 miles north of Orlando. It’s downtown is about six or eight blocks full of antique shops and craft stores–paradise for Snowgirl and her sister (my dear spouse).

You see, our house is merely a repository for four things: our beds, our computers, our cats, and all of the fabric, beads, buttons, thread, sewing machines, glue guns, cutting boards, and other necessary materials and implements o’doom required of a crafty woman. And her sister blows her own glass beads, fer cryin’ out loud! Escaping the craft and bead stores for the entire visit was out of the question, even if I tried. (Hold on, guys, beer’s coming.)

At lunch time, we ducked into The Windsor Rose English Tea Room. Yes, I said “tea room”. Fine china cups and saucers. Tea pots with tea cozies. Finger sandwiches. The works. It couldn’t have gotten more girly…

This particular tea room had several choices for Afternoon Tea, and the women-folk chose The Windsor Rose – Full English Tea for Two:

Freshly baked scones with Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry jam. Assorted finger sandwiches, pastries, Queen Victoria sponge cake and a pot of tea for two.

Ah, but this particular tea room is run by a man! The decor, rather than being overly froo-froo, reminded us of an English country restaurant (not that we’ve ever actually seen one). And, in addition to Afternoon Tea, he offered High Tea! That means Manly Lunch! Cottage pie. Chicken and Leek Pie. Cornish Pasty. Scotch Egg. And more than tea…. GUINESS!! (See? I told you there’d be beer.)

Ejen had the cottage pie, and I had the Ploughman’s Lunch–wedges of cheddar and swiss cheese, fresh baked bread, salad with English salad cream, and a dollop of Branston pickle (a chutney-style vegetable relish to die for). It was perfect. We shall return.

I have to carry Ejen and Snowgirl to the airport at 4:30am tomorrow, so I’d better shut this thing off now. We’ll miss them. It was a great two weeks!

Carnival of the Vanities #15

Whew! Happy 2003 everybody, and here’s your first present: Carnival of the Vanities #15.

It’s too big for a regular blog entry, so I gave it its own page! I hope everyone doesn’t lynch me over it…

Happy New Year

If I might be serious for a moment (bring the house lights down, Morty, wouldya?), I just want to thank all the wonderful, wonderful people I’ve met and conversed with since starting this thing in March. It’s had the side-effect of reuniting me in conversation with some of the non-blogging friends I had not spoken to on a regular basis in a very long time, too.

I love you all.

This blog has brought me nothing but joy–with two exceptions:

– The week that I switched to Bloggerzone and went out of town, leaving it a mess I couldn’t fix; and
– Any time I see one of my friends in pain (and I am DEAD SERIOUS about that. I have a “superhero complex” that could do with some therapy, actually…).

I hope that I have been able to make you smile at the goofy faces I make for you. You’re all worth it.

Have a Happy New Year. That’s an order from the Master of Minions.

We Have a Winner!

And the award for 1000th Comment since I switched to Movable Type goes to Kat:

You should have been on there just for being the god of my blog. Happy Neo Year hunny!!!

For that, she gets the Golden Commenters Trophy (to be handed to the 2000th commenter upon reaching that milestone). Unlike that cheap bastard, Scott, I give imaginary prizes with my horn blowing, so nyah!

St. Augustine

Well, I took a wee break from the blograce today to drive up to St. Augustine. We had intended to do that Saturday, but after walking a hundred miles around the World Showcase Lagoon at Epcot Friday, we decided to veg this weekend.

I forgot how much cool stuff there is to see up there (assuming you’re a history nerd). So, naturally, we took our sweet time getting up there (including lengthy stops at Cracker Barrel for breakfast and at a bead shop in Ormond Beach. (The female half of the traveling party are quite crafty and needed to feed their beading habit.) Since we didn’t arrive until a couple of hours before all the historical attractions close, we’re going back on Wednesday.

I did a Google search for St. Augustine sights, and found a nice one at Coping.org Travelogue – St. Augustine.
