Er…

Holy crap, people. It is ok to tell me when I’m FLAT, FLAT, FLAT!!

I’ve taken down the holiday song until I can re-record it with vocals that don’t make me claw my eyeballs out.

And now for something completely different…

One of the things I find fascinating is the contrast between the light and the dark sides of some artists. Guys like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard crossed back-and-forth across that line so many times it seemed like they were afraid of getting caught by either God or the Devil. Elvis Presley loved (and was very good at) singing gospel songs. At the same time, he really just wanted to be an old black man singing the blues. Nowadays, either you’re a squeaky clean pop singer or Marilyn Manson. There is no struggle.

Johnny Cash was so good at crossing the line, his record company compiled his songs into a 3-volume set with the titles of God, Love, and Murder.

Another great thing about Cash was that he never stopped moving forward. He kept trying new things right up until the day he died. One of his great, haunting songs is “Thirteen” by Glenn Danzig (not exactly a well-known name in the halls of Nashville). I saw it on Michele’s 500 Songs List and just had to give it a try.

This is just about as opposite from the last song I uploaded as you can get. I’m just sayin’…

And, of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace…

Just in case you haven’t heard enough crap holiday music, here’s another one for you.

And in case you couldn’t tell, I am not a classically trained guitarist. My new best friend, Jools, not only got me a recording of this wonderful song by Ralph McTell (whom I hope will make my death quick and painless if he ever hears this), but he also painstakingly transcribed the guitar tab for me to mangle. Dank u, Jools!

Dear blog…

Hello blog. I’m not ignoring you. Heavens no! You are the means by which I deliver my hypnotic chants to the universe. However, I am spending this week — this glorious, wondermous, fabulousitous vacation week — cranking out more annoying crap. So, um, bye.

p.s. That last one was purty good, weren’t it? Thanks, blog. You rawk!

It is the night with Christmas trees and pie

Hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving. Ours was particularly pleasant, having just the four of us around the table. Since our schedules are all over the place and I don’t get home until late, our evening meals are either eaten in a pizza place or sitting on the couch watching The Simpsons (or, in my case, in front of the computer). So, it was nice to be all traditional and stuff for a change.

Afterwards, we played Apples to Apples, the point of which is to find the best match for the topic on the table from a card in your hand. Of course, with this group of sarcastic snotheads, the term “best match” means “come up with the stupidest thing you can think of.” A good time was had by all.

Now, it’s time to gear up for Christmas. I can tell this, because I haven’t seen my spouse in the morning for the last two days. (Being in retail means never having to say you have the day after Thanksgiving off.) She had to be at the store at 6am Friday and is at work again today.

So, I guess it’s time to get into the Christmas spirit. Time to dig out the ole Bing Crosby records, put up the Christmas tree, and read “A Christmas Carol.” Which is why I’m going to dig out Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics, put up the Christmas tree (eventually), and read Christmas is Full of Crap. It’s not that I dislike Christmas (or Bing Crosby). I’m just not ready for it, yet.

Muppet News Flash!

It’s pretty sad to get your news from watching the Macy’s parade, but I’m just now hearing about the The Muppet Wizard of Oz. This is cooler than cool!

Not only that, but I’ve found such a cool Muppet site: Toughpigs.com!

Thanksgiving indeed.

Happy Thanksgiving, geeks!

(Hint: It’s not too late to buy Christmas cards… I’m just sayin’….)

Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday. Since one brother got stuck in Philadelphia (he’s feeling much better now, thanks for the good wishes), and another in Georgia with vehicle problems, we’re going to be on our own for the first time since 1996 or so. It’s kinda nice not to have a schedule to keep. We can halt all the cleaning, don’t have to get dressed, can just sit around and watch parades all morning and eat turkey all afternoon. There is more to be thankful for, but that’s a nice start.

Football: Week 12

Since the NFL has intruded on what was the traditional “Have A Turkey Induced Coma While Watching College Football Day,” I am forced to make my picks early. Bastidges.

(Apparently, they’ve played pro football on Thanksgiving since 1920. Who knew?)
