Since We’re Talking About Marvel Super Hero’s…

The fellow who runs this place made a statement, not that long ago, that SpiderMan 2 was The.Best.Comicbook.Movie.Ever. Or some such.

I don’t know as I want to argue that point with him. (Actually, I don’t want to argue much with him, ‘cuz he always wins arguments. With me anyway.)

But I want to make a case for X-Men 2 as The Best ComicBook Movie For Comicbook Geeks Ever. In otherwords, it is my firmly held belief (and one that is almost 30 minutes old, as I have recently finished watching X-2 tonite) that X-Men 2 has so much to offer for those who are/were “into” the comicbook. So many little touches, so many inside things that weren’t germane to the story itself, but weren’t out of place to the casual moviegoer. They didn’t beat you over the head with those cool little details, in a nutshell.

This is not to say that the Spiderman movies don’t do that, too. Or that comicbook geeks don’t get some of the “extra’s” in those productions. But I contend that the Spiderman movies are much more accessible to the non-comics reading public than the X-Men movies. Perhaps that is they way it should be.

The casting for the X-Men movies is so fantastic that it is hard to describe, especially to the non-comics reading public. Patrick Stewart as Prof X, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Ian McKellan as Magneto, Tim Roth as Nightcrawler. Those are perfect choices. The rest of the casting choices are fine, as well. I just grin during many of the scenes, as the people on the screen take me back so vividly to the comics that I read “way back when.”

Then compare Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane. She is believable, and does a wonderful job. She just isn’t as you recalled Mary Jane from reading the comics. (Personally, I don’t know who you could have cast for that part, to be as close to the comic as the X-Men choices were. Probably no one with marquee value. Kinda like Hugh Jackman was when the first X-Men movies was cast…) I will say that the casting of J.Jonah, both Osbournes, and Doc Ock were quite good, though.

I don’t know where this is going. I loved the Spiderman movies. But I like the X-Men movies more.

Ric…I agree with you. He who runs this place already had an apoplectic stroke when I wrote in my own abode that I didn’t much like Spiderman2…but you are absolutely right….I think that both X-Men movies were the best comic book movies EVER!

  2. Karan says:

BTW Solonor, I’m glad you and yours are safe and sound!

“He who runs this place?” Voldemort’s here?

  4. Ric The Schmuck says:

No, silly, he won’t be back till his cable gets turned back on! (ducking)

  5. Mrs R. says:

I have to agree with Ric on this one, though my opinion did cause a bit of a disagreement in the Rasreth abode. I am glad to hear that I was not alone in this. Pepperkat agrees also. BTW, cable is back…Yay!
