Ever since I posted this about the Mike Daisey protest, I have been scolding myself in my own head for piling on the bandwagon.
Shouldn’t I have just refrained from creating more anti-Christian sentiment?
Shouldn’t I have just used their bad example as a personal lesson and not trumpeted my own wonderfulness at not being like them?
Well, of course, I should have. For, you see, it turns out that these awful representatives of the Christian religion were, in fact, just plain old awful representatives of regular humanity.
John Hodgman has issued a clarification and an apology. To it, I add my own.
well, Solly, i think this is forgivable – Mike Daisy’s own blog post about it identified the 87 as members of a Christian group. when i read that i assumed it to be fact – who better to know than the guy who actually experienced it, right?
and, maybe i didn’t see it in the same light, but i didn’t think your post was anti-xtian. just anti-nutjob.
His post today goes further in explaining what really happened and how they identified themselves as a Christian group at first.
I did intend my post to be anti-nutjob and especially NOT anti-Christian (since I am supposed to be one). I should refrain from making my posts anti-anything, though.
Except anti-Yankees. 😛
Go ahead and be anti-Norco. It’s a terrible place to live.
If you believe that people should stop acting in a manner that shed’s you and yours in a bad light, you most certainly should shine the light of day upon those peoples actions. In a civil, reasonable manner, like you did. Those folks were not making their complaints known in a civil manner.
Therein lies the difference. You keep on keepin’ on. Yours are the kinds of actions that can really affect change. Because you are much more likely to be listened to. Not necessarily agreed with, but at least listened to. The loud, boorish actions will be dismissed right out of hand.
I just checked. Rebuking is OK.
Repuking…not so fun.
