It’s the most wonderful time of the year: when a jolly, white-bearded man delivers prezzies to all the weird little nerds and geeks! Yes, kids, it’s Dr. Demento bringing us his annual Funny 25, the countdown of the most requested looney tunes of the year.
That also means it’s time to update my compilation of Dr. Demento’s TOP 100 (or so) DEMENTED HITS (from Funny 25’s) – 1974 to 2008.
This year’s edition seems to have a lot more of the classics compared to the last few. For example, all of the top five songs on my list appear on the 2008 Funny 25. On top of that, Shel Silverstein’s The Smoke-Off, which first appeared on the countdown in 1979, showed up for the first time since 2001 and moved up into the top 15. (I found a great video of him appearing on the Johnny Cash show. In fact, I tried to link videos to these entries as much as possible.)
Viagra in the Waters moved up a notch from #20 to #19.
One of my favorites, the Dead Alewives’ Dungeons and Dragons, appeared for the first time since 2000 and jumped from #33 to #25.
Weird Al’s White and Nerdy continued its march up the charts, going from #50 to #31.
Jonathan Coulton’s Re: Your Brains and The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny by Lemon Demon which both first appeared in 2006 moved into a tie for #50.
New to the top 100 are Robert Lund’s 99 Words for Boobs at #45, It’s Business Time by Flight of the Conchords at #79 and Hold On, I’ve Got To Take This by Power Salad at #92.
Because of the new entries, we say goodbye to a bunch of songs that were tied for #100 on the list, including:
The Freckle Song (Larry Vincent)
Adam West (Wally Wingert and the Caped Club)
Ooh, Don’t Touch That (Laszlo and Gary)
“Ren and Stimpy” (The Defective Kids)(?)
Headline News (“Weird Al” Yankovic)
Reinstalling Windows (Les Barker)
Charliesomething (Eric Schwartz)
Frank’s Not In The Band Anymore (Worm Quartet)
Couch Potato (“Weird Al” Yankovic)
Sirius Black (Tony Goldmark)
You Don’t Know Jack (the great Luke Ski)
Getting Old Sucks (Sudden Death)

I actually got a wind-up radio for Christmas. I dunno if it will play any of these songs, though heh.
I see that Dead Puppies fell out of the Top 25, pout pout.
But Fish Heads is still hanging in there! 🙂
“da, Gosh folks I’m speechless” 😀
67 and 92, not a bad start….
