A cold, wild wind has come

CNN.com – The ‘Man in Black’ Johnny Cash dead at 71 – Sep. 12, 2003

Johnny Cash was probably one of the first musical sounds I ever heard. He was the staple of my dad’s repertoire. The lead to “Folsom Prison Blues” is one of the first things I learned to play on the guitar. I still have his Sun recordings in hot rotation on my PC.

It wasn’t that he was a great singer. Or should I say, it wasn’t that he had a great voice. No, neither one of those statements is correct. He was a great singer with an incredible, unique voice. But, like Bob Dylan, it takes getting used to for some people. It was dark, growling and passionate. There’s not a single Cash song–from the serious (“I Walk the Line”) to the silly (“A Boy Named Sue”)–that he did half-way.

Like all teenagers, I drifted a bit from the Cult o’ Cash. He wasn’t cool. Until, of course, I realized that the coolest cats are the ones who don’t try to be cool. He was a rebel at Sun, refusing to listen to traditional country wisdom. He was a rebel at Columbia, adding different instruments like horns (“Ring of Fire”) to country and writing defiant, meaningful lyrics (“What is Truth?”) or celebrating the unsung hero (“The Ballad of Ira Hayes”). And he never stopped–covering Nine Inch Nails in his 70’s, giving it even more dark meaning.

The old man turned off the radio
Said, “Where did all of the old songs go
Kids sure play funny music these days
They play it in the strangest ways”
Said, “it looks to me like they’ve all gone wild
It was peaceful back when I was a child”
Well, man, could it be that the girls and boys
Are trying to be heard above your noise?
And the lonely voice of youth cries “What is truth?”

Wil Wheaton Nude? Ewww.

Just imagine the Google hits now… *shudder*

Ms. Kat is getting a jump start on the competition this year. As a response to the silliness of bloggers having their own Oscar Awards like the Bloggies, last Februrary she created the ***Nude Weblog Awards***. To avoid the last-minute crunch this year, she’s opening up nominations in October. So, put your thinking caps on and get ready.

Meanwhile, check out her new eBook: Just Say No to Love – Advice for the Romance-Impaired. I get 10% commission. (Shhh! If I say it enough times, she might pay me one by accident.)

Just Remember

I’m not an advocate of turning this date into an national day of mourning. I don’t think that does anything beyond giving a group of religious zealots a chance to say, “See? They aren’t so great. We can hurt them.”

Three thousand men and women who just wanted to get through another long, boring Tuesday died at the hands of people who think your long, boring Thursday is an affront to God. If you can even fathom it, how can you forget it?

But how do you remember the murder of 3,000 people without mourning? How do you make sure the opposite doesn’t happen? That we don’t simply go on with our own little lives and forget about it like it was some Irwin Allen disaster movie? Or worse, give away our right to remember to a corporate-sponsored media spectacle or to power-hungry politicians who’ll whip us into a frenzy of revenge and faux patriotism for their own gain?

I think you do it by making it a day of personal reflection. Celebrate the freedom that is at the very core of the tragedy by choosing your own path to remembrance. Many will do it by saying nothing. A silent prayer. Some will march defiantly onward in creative displays of freedom. And, yes, some will mourn. It doesn’t matter. Just remember.

And thank God for every long, boring Thursday.

Car Talk

I’ve mentioned before that we have the strangest in-transit conversations. But I think that we broke some kind of weirdness barrier when discussing why legal protections for monkeys stealing the Hope Diamond was taken out of the Constitution. This, even after they fought so well in the Revolution. It was a guerilla war, after all…

Yeah. Yeah. Like you didn’t see it coming.

And In The End

The love you take is equal to the love you make.

Good thing no one’s ever mean-spirited in the blogisphere. That would suck.

Good night, Princess.

Oh! The Drama!

If you don’t go and place a write-in vote for Zuly: The Biggest Drama Queen in the Blogospheriverse, we’ll never hear the end of it. She’s such a whiny, pathetic sort. Always crying about stuff. Now, she wants to win and give the prize to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. What a bitch!

Considering some of my favorite people in the world are on this list (sorry, but that link takes you to Google now…isn’t that HEEELARIOUS?), she needs all the help she can get.

“Vote for Zuly — There’s Nothing More Dramatic Than an Apocalypse!”

You’re not allowed to rent here anymore

Ya know, I’ve always wondered what it would be like if Captain America and Daredevil starred in Clerks (with the Silver Surfer and Galactus as Jay and Silent Bob, of course).

Too bad they never made that… What’s that? They have? I so love they!

Check out HEROES.
