See? He’s just as normal as you or I.

I missed this when I was away a couple of weeks ago. No wonder I keep hearing footsteps behind me every time I go down a dark alley…

Probing For Answers

I don’t know what kind of mind-altering substance our lovely Ju has been taking, but somehow she got it into her head that she could hold a serious conversation with GeekMan. So, all this week (or however long her drugs hold out), Jill will be interviewing the Father of Modern Chinese Literature and the Baron of Jock Itch, Bubble Wrap and Cheesy Comestibles, Mighty Geek XIV. (Dang, that random title link comes in handy!)

You dare not miss it. Be there, or be trampled by a thousand rabid llamas dressed as Paul Harvey on their way to an all-you-can-eat Canadian waffle house. Aloha.

Random Bits o’ Linkage

I’ve got a few links sitting in Draft mode. So, since I’m going to be spending half my time between now and Thursday getting ready for Gnomedex and the other half catering to the baseball-hungry minions of the SGCBL, I thought I’d just clean house and dump them all here. Enjoy!

NITLE Weblog Census – Now we just have to watch out for Blog Taxes…

Cosmic Encounter Online – A really cool online version of the classic game (FREE!)

Celestia – A 3D Space Simulator… really, really coooool.

Random Title and Name Generator – You can now call me Secondary Alderman of Indefinite Timeframes, Reverend Solonor Rasreth, thank you very much.

Have a great week!

If it’s on TV, it must be true!

I’m not saying I’ll never, ever get caught in a hoax or a scam, but I always make Snopes my first stop after hearing some bit of outrageous news.

I just wish “respected” news sources would take the time to research their stories. Or are we supposed to just swallow the all of their crap without question?

I’m not just picking on Fox. Hoaxes have been around for a long time. (Check out The Museum of Hoaxes for some good historical perspective.) But this one wasn’t even that good! Certainly not of the caliber of The Top 100 April Fool’s Day Hoaxes of All Time.

The night was moist.

Jim was cold, not cold like the ah-choo I’m dying cold they show you in those Nyquil ads (though if he stayed out in the drizzly wetness much longer, he could play the role of the suffering guy who has to get up in the morning but can’t sleep until his wife gets him some sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever so you can rest medicine), but the kind of cold that only standing out in the street in your pajamas looking for your cat in the rain of a dark and stormy night can bring.

I have to remember to enter this thing next year.

I spent about 30 minutes reading the 2003 winning entries for the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest to Whiny and the Mrs. We were rolling on the floor. They’re much funnier when read aloud. Perhaps I’ll record a couple for you. Perhaps not.

Here’s a Lyttony of Grand Prize Winners for you to groan along with at home.

She Oughta Be A Law

But, no, she’s just a Bill. And she’s not one of those nasty ones that you wish you’d never see but somehow winds up on your doorstep at just the wrong moment, either. I did hear that she might be an expensive one, but if I use American money, she’s 38% cheaper!

Solonor’s Aortal Site of the Week is Billegible. Welcome back, m’dear. Missed you.

Masked and Anonymous

In a fictional America caught up in a civil war that is tearing the nation apart, a benefit concert is being organized. A traveling troubadour named Jack Fate is sprung from jail by his scheming former manager, Uncle Sweetheart, to headline a concert with the expectations to bring peace to a country that is entrenched by chaos, lawlessness and pandemonium.

For starters, Jack Fate is played by Bob Dylan, and Uncle Sweetheart by John Goodman. Add in stars Jeff Bridges, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Lange and Luke Wilson, and mix it with an ensemble cast of Angela Bassett, Steven Bauer, Bruce Dern, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, Cheech Marin, Chris Penn, Giovanni Ribisi, Mickey Rourke, Richard Sarafian, Christian Slater, Susan Tyrrell, Tracey Walter, Fred Ward and Robert Wisdom, and you don’t even need an appearance by Shirley Jones as a prostitute to make it a movie!

Masked and Anonymous is the first movie Bob Dylan has done in 16 years or so, and it looks to be a little bit…strange. But that’s all right by me. I’d much rather sit through a movie trying to figure out what the hell a guy in minstrel black face, John Paul II, Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Ella the Fortuneteller and the Rubber Girl have to do with each other than snore through an hour waiting for some dude to get angry and turn green. As Dylan says in the trailer, “Sometimes it’s not enough to know the meaning of things. Sometimes we need to know what they don’t mean as well.” Besides, the soundtrack looks awesome.

It’s directed by Seinfeld’s Larry Charles, who will bring his own twisted vision to the mix, I am sure. I’m just afraid it won’t show up in any theaters around here, so I’ll have to wait for the DVD.

Now that I got me some Seagram’s gin…

I’ve been meaning to write about this for many months, but affairs of state take precedence over affairs of state. Or something.

Anyway, I got a copy of the British magazine Uncut back in March of 2002 (ahem, told ya), and it had a sampler CD. This one was titled “Sounds of the new West Vol 3” and had a lot of funky alt-country stuff on it. Some good. Some not so. But one little tune grabbed my attention, so I put it into my regular MP3 rotation.

Turn the page. Now, one day I am sitting back, grooving to the tune, when suddenly I hear, “I got a pocket full of rubbers and my homeboys do too.” WHAT!? Waitaminute. I never heard that before. I guess I wasn’t listening to the lyrics very carefully. Turns out the song is The Gourds cover of “Gin and Juice” by Snoop Dogg. Doh!

After I actually listened to the thing, I found it hysterical. The lyrics are the standard “get yer party on” rap stuff, but when the Gourds put it into a country setting, it becomes fall-on-the-floor funny. At least to me.

To make matters worse, now that the clue-mobile has finally caught up to me, I found out that this was already a big deal two years ago. Apparently, it was a huge hit on Napster, and there was some controversy because it kept getting attributed to Phish, instead. Whatevah.

So, there’s yer critic for ya. Attention to detail, a specialty. Oy vey.

You can listen to the song, if you join the gourdsmusic Yahoo Group. And visit the Official Unofficial Gourds Homepage, while yer at it.

I don’t love you ho’s, I’m out the do’.
