… that the SciFi Channel is being run by idiots (as if you needed more).
A woman is suing the producers of a new reality show in the works for the network for kidnapping her and forcing her to witness a staged murder by an alien. They apparently want “to broaden their audience beyond the ‘Star Trek’ crowd” by appealing to the drooling moron crowd.

Crud! I fully intended to do this on… oh… I dunno… MONDAY for a change… PromoGuy’s Monday Mission 3.07.
They even looked here. But those silly weapons inspectors cannot find weapons of mass destruction.

Brian Livingston, one of the best Microsoft gurus out there, has developed a new service, called WinFind.
In an article for InfoWorld, Mr. Livingston describes the new search engine as indexing more than a dozen Web sites packed with extensive and reliable Windows guidance.
Reliable is the key. He’s got tips from such great sites as Annoyances.org, The Langa List, PCWorld and LockerGnome. So, you get good advice instead of rolling the dice on a Google search and getting, “My cousin said not to worry about opening attachments from strangers. He does it all the time and nothing bad’s ever happened.”

Sometimes I am shocked by things my son doesn’t know.
For example, the other day he asked me a perfectly logical question for someone born in 1986: “How did the DJ pick the right song so fast on a record before there were CD’s?”
Now, what he really meant was how could the guy be talking to Joe Bozo on the phone (Uhhh… yeah… like, um, could you play that song by that chick with the hair?) and immediately find it and play it when all he had was grooves to go on. But it did make me realize that there’s a whole batch of people that have never seen an LP – or if they have, they wouldn’t actually know what to do with it. Kinda like the stock “man from the past tries to play a CD on his record player” joke in reverse.
Anyway, tonight I found out he’d never seen A Fish Called Wanda. What kind of a parent am I?? I’m so ashamed.
His mother’s just finished fixing that oversight for us this evening. But I have to wonder: Where else have we gone wrong?
Did you know that Joe Millionaire’s not really rich?? How the hell did I miss that one coming?
Sgt. Grump found this little gem from World War II: The Mickey Mouse Mask – a gas mask for kids.
Which ties in nicely with Tim’s find: Duct Tape and Cover.
Laurence recently posted about the transformation of our habits due to the wider availability of information via the Internet. To paraphrase, he’s noticed that he’s gone from whining about not being able to look up an actor’s filmography during a movie or TV show to not being able to resist hopping on IMDb every five minutes. Or something like that.
Every day I find myself in the same boat:
I need to know what musicals Rodgers and Hammerstein did… IMDb.
I need to know the tracks on the Beatles’ Revolver CD… Amazon.
I need to know that it’s “effrontery” not “affrontery”… Dictionary.com.
I need to know how to get from the St. Louis airport to Cuba, MO… MapQuest.
I need to know the showtimes for Chicago… DigitalCity Orlando.
I need to know the origin of the phrase “hat trick” (or anything not covered by the above)… Google.
I don’t think there is a single day that has gone by since Google was invented that I have not used it. What’s really sad is that I’ve come to use it as a crutch. I know the answer to your question… I just can’t remember it. Ever.
I know there are different (and possibly better) tools out there, but these are the ones I have come to rely upon. When they come out with versions that plug directly into my brain, I’ll be standing in line.
Is there a site that you use as a daily tool? One that would cut your heart out if it went away?
