What’s Not to Like?

Terrorist threats. Impending war. Soft economy. Racial disharmony. Political fighting. Lately, it seems that there’s not a lot of good to say about the good ol’ U.S.A.

In her blog, Michele responded to the recent spate of opinion pieces from around the globe that fall under the heading of “What is There to Like About America?”

Have A Heart

I’ve been meaning to sign up for this forever. AORTAL – the anti-portal is a collection of sites that have agreed to at least once a week promote another in the independent web.

I know, I’m a big ol’ link slut already, but this will give me a chance to have a specific topic for Friday and to look for a neat, new site about which to write. For now, I’m going to limit the sites I pick to blogs, but that may change.

Solonor’s Aortal Site of the Week is a n a c r h o n i c:

What’s this:

Clop-clop! Clop-clop! Clop-clop! BANG! Clop-clop! Clop-clop!

An Amish drive-by.

Neal Pollack is my hero

Neal Pollack, “the Greatest Living American Writer,” espouses my precise opinion on the war debate. If you are a passionate pro-war or anti-war pontificator and are easily offended, please do not read his article in The Stranger.

I’ll shut up now.

Are You Pondering What I’m Pondering?

Yes, I’ve finally been sucked into this Nation States thing, too. My country, The Kingdom of Goofbeckistan, “is a tiny, safe nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 6 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The Final Five

I feel really bad. I feel like I’ve abandoned Shel and all his hard work at putting together and running blogwhore 2: the revenge of blogwhore, because I haven’t pimped it since getting the boot.

For shame.

These people are working their butts off to make an entertaining show. I’m still watching. I hope lots of people are. If you’re not going to the game site, at least pay a visit to the participating blogs.

Final Five Contestants: Cheyne, Chris, Cis, Cyn and Liz.

Eliminated: Chuck, Fredo, Jen, MG, Micky and Tanya.

Judges: Shel, Philo, Rannie, Jill and Christine.

Peanut Gallery: Geno, Jerwin, Max, Michele, Nancy, Todd and William Ted.

It looks like it might be down to a Final Four soon…

Hear and Obey

Excerpt from Carnival of the Vanities 15:

Of course, Arthur at The Light of Reason goes way beyond the usual lightweight drivel found at my site with What If … Imagination, Tolerance, and an Unpredictable — But Possibly Glorious — FutureThe possibilities are limitless, and so the choice is a simple one: you can either focus primarily on what is wrong with the world now, or you can ask yourself: What if…? And the answers to that seemingly simple question are bounded only by your imagination.
I resolve to be Arthur Silber when I grow up. Don’t look for that in 2003.

Partly because of that, and partly because the demon wench commands it, I urge you all to go and toss a few pennies Mr. Silber’s way, now that he needs it.

At the same time, toss off a quick “you go guy” to Zander.

Send it to ZOOM!

Yes, I was a ZOOM kid. And the cool thing is that it’s still around! (Hey, it’s my site. I decide what’s cool. OK?)

So, if I occasionally slip into the official language of a ZOOMer, here’s a handy dandy ubbi dubbi translator for you.

Ubif yubou dubon’t lubike ubit, BUBITE MUBE!
