Nothing could live up to all the pre-show hype, but we just got back from Snakes On A Plane, and it was freaking hilarious! It’s the most bloody, ridiculous, gross, stupid, cheesy movie I’ve seen in a long time, and it was worth every penny just to hear that immortal line from Samuel L. Jackson.
Advice: See the movie with a bunch of friends. It’s got a Rocky Horror kind of feel to it. I don’t think it would be nearly so much fun without an audience that knows what they’re supposed to see (and when they’re supposed to cheer).
I have to admit, it was weird seeing my album on Amazon.com and iTunes, but it’s even weirder seeing your songs in a mix on Pandora in between Wilco, the Shins and John Prine.
I got an e-mail from one of my old bandmates (the one with his back to the camera, leading to the many “Walter is Dead” rumors) who told me the following tale:
It’s Sunday night (actually Monday morning now) and the wife and kids are at camp. I’m home alone and listening to Pandora. I’ve got channels like Napalm Death, Superjoint Ritual and Soulfly, you know, easy listening stuff but, as of late, I’ve been listening to a lot of Bikini Kill, Throwing Muses, Shonen Knife. One of the bands on that channel is The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. I click on Pandora’s “More Info” link for them and then click on the band Santa Dog in the “Related Bands” section. From there I notice The Fondas as a related band of Santa Dog. I almost don’t click on The Fondas, but the thumbnail of their album cover has a picture of the band and I wanted a better look at it (mostly, I wanted to see what the girl in the band looked like).
So, I’m reading the synopsis of The Fondas latest album, Runaway Bombshell, and take a look at the “Similar Albums” section. There’s The Smoking Popes and Be Your Own Pet. Nothing new, I’ve heard of them before. Then…
Lester Norton, Like Sailors Do.
My first thought is, “I’ve got to get a link to this and send it to Lester, he would be amused by the fact that someone has the same name and has an album on Pandora.” I click on the “Listen to a Sample” link for of one the songs and nearly have a myocardial infarction, “That’s not someone with Lester’s name, it is Lester.”
After the initial shock, I realize that I’m not surprised at the fact that you’ve released an album. If any one could do it, it would be you. What I’m really floored by is the way that I found it. Of all the thousands (millions?) of links that I could have possibly clicked, how the hell did I get to your album? To draw a poor allusion: It’s like surfing porn and coming upon your wife in one of the pictures, so to speak.
Wicked cool, non?
So, go ahead and get set up with Pandora, then create a “Lester Norton Radio” station. You might actually like it!
This is the sappiest thing ever… and I’m completely hooked on it.
It’s got music I would never, ever, listen to without a gun at my head.
It’s got clips artificially arranged to induce maximum sniffle quotient.
It features a character who grates on my nerves about 50 percent of the time.
And I can’t stop watching it! Argh!
(Yes, yes, it’s more Doctor Who. Shut up.)
WARNING: Spoilers involved. If you don’t want to see into the future even a little bit, then don’t watch this video. Personally, it just makes me want September 29 to arrive sooner.
Oddly enough, I’ve never been tagged for this one before. But Posted in Strangeness 3 Comments
Looks like the Christmas Invasion will be shown after all. w00t!
“The SCI FI Channel and BBC Worldwide Americas have confirmed that Doctor Who will return to SCI FI in September 2006. The run will kick off with a two-hour premiere package that will include David Tennant’s debut, The Christmas Invasion.” … Though we’d heard in recent days that there was significant confusion over whether or not “The Christmas Invasion” would be broadcast as a holiday special or as part of the actual run, it now appears that it will be the item that fills part of the two-hour slot on Friday 29 September, which is the date that is listed on the Sci Fi Channel website schedule. – Outpost Gallifrey
“Series Two of the new Doctor Who series starring David Tennant and Billie Piper will, by all indication, see its US debut on September 29 on the Sci Fi Channel, along with Series One repeats earlier in the day.” – Outpost Gallifrey
Major w00t!! (Though I’m holding my breath, since I’m in a “don’t trust SciFi” kinda mood.)
I saw The Christmas Invasion (warning: spoilers!) online earlier in the year, and it’s a great introduction to David Tennant’s version of the Doctor. However, it’s up in the air as to whether we’ll get to see it on SciFi this time.
Will “The Christmas Invasion” be included? Says Benjamin Elliott of “This Week in Doctor Who,” “The Christmas Invasion is 59 minutes long without commercials, so it would either have to be a) skipped and shown later or b) have 15 1/2 minutes chopped out of it to fit SciFi’s schedule as currently displayed. It does have an extended trailer for Series 2 that could be cut and the credits will always get squeezed, but that still leaves 13 minutes unaccounted for. SciFi has always felt willing to change their schedule at a moment’s notice, so things can always change. They could air Christmas Invasion complete and have filler to finish the 2 hours. But for now, we must assume one of the following 2 scenarios: 9pm Christmas Invasion and 10pm New Earth, or 9pm New Earth and 10pm Tooth and Claw. The Christmas Invasion isn’t required to enjoy Series 2, but some references (notably at the end of the series) make more sense if you see it, and as David Tennant’s debut story it helps establish the kind of Doctor he is.” Also noted is the fact that the Daytime marathon on September 29 on the Sci Fi Channel is the last 8 episodes of Series 1, which makes sense to lead into the new episodes.
Snakes…in your inbox. Don’t be surprised if Mr. Samuel L. Jackson leaves you a personal message.
Grrrr. I hate SciFi. They have such promise, and sometimes they come through with great stuff, but too often they wimp out and go back to their fallback: paranormal crap.
Yes, I’m a little pissed that I waited all week to see Garth Marengi’s Darkplace, only to find that they replaced it (after one fricking episode) with a cookie for the moronic masses, Ghost Hunters (one of the stupidest shows on television).
Sorry. That’s all the eloquent prose I have for you these summer days.
