May The Sauce be with you

[ insert obligatory “I know everyone else has seen this already” note here ]

Les mentioned the Onion article Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With ‘Intelligent Falling’ Theory, and he said that ***Dave wondered if we’d see it reported as real news soon. So, I went looking.

I didn’t find any “real” news articles on IF Theory, but I did stumble across a sarcastic blog entry at Pharyngula, where the comments section has been taken over by militant, pirate-clad Pastafarians.

What is a Pastafarian? Why, a follower of Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, of course.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster. All praise his noodly goodness. RAmen.

I have my Bruce “Don’t Call Me Ash” Campbell bookmark and a pocket full of memories… or is that a popcorn shell?

Well, we’re back from seeing Man with the Screaming Brain, and I must say it was magnificently bad. In fact, I declare that it is the most wondrously horrible movie ever to take brain transplants, wanton sex, cat fights, exploding Vespas, mad scientists, ex-KGB agents, billionaire industrialists, crash test dummy robots and a Russian wannabe rapper and mix them together. Well, ok, there was Titanic, but was that set in Bulgaria? No, it wasn’t, Mr. Smarty Pants. So there!

It was worth the price of admission just for Bruce Campbell’s intro and Q&A before the movie. This is one seriously cool and funny guy. There should be more Bruce Campbells. In fact, I think that cloning would get all the Federal funding it needed, if scientists would just promise to only clone Bruce Campbell. (Actually, I think that’s his next movie…)

Oh, and I must disagree with Mr. Campbell. It’s not really so much The Out-of-Towners set in Bulgaria as it is All of Me with a robot.

And I miss the dinosaurs outside my cave, too.

It used to be that we could look back just 5 or 10 years and be amazed at how far we’d come. I remember in the late 80’s or early 90’s talking about the fact that when we graduated high school, we didn’t have PC’s, the Internet, music on CD, or cable TV. And, while they were around, we didn’t have a VCR or a remote control for the TV. Calculators still cost hundreds of dollars. No cell phones. No laptops. No digital cameras. No laser printers. No e-mail.

It’s still amazing to me, but unfortunately it is starting to sound less like “wow! lookit all the neat stuff we got we didn’t have yesterday!” and more like “you damned kids don’t know how good you got it…why, back in my day…”

So, when I saw this link from Slashdot about electronic bulletin boards, called BBS: The Documentary, my first thought was: “Hey! Wow! It was just yesterday that we were running our baseball league on TriBBS and using ‘high-speed,’ 2400-baud modems!”

My second thought was: “No, you idiot. That was over 15 years ago, and you haven’t needed to used a modem in almost 4 years.”

Still, it’s a cool site for an old geek. I especially love the All-Time BBS Software List with links to every piece of BBS software known to man.

Ominous Tidings

ME: So, you’re going out for a driving lesson?
MRS: Yes, as soon as I do my exercises.
ME: Ah. Want to be in shape to run from the fiery crash?
MRS: No. There are no fiery crashes allowed. Isn’t that right, Em?
EMILY: Awwww….

Congrats Maitland Little League

Maitland advances to Little League World Series

Wow. Just finished watching that on ESPN. My place of employ is in Maitland, and my boss’ son plays on their regular squad.

That was a fun game of baseball to watch. It’s awesome to see the enthusiasm the kids have, their respect for the game and their opponents, the great coaches on both sides. The big guys could learn a thing or two from them.

Miscellaneous junk and a post from flickr!

chyann,
originally uploaded by Solonor.

Finally got a picture of the new niece. Everybody say awwwwww…

What else is new… let’s see…

Pepperkat got her permit. You have been warned.

For some reason, this thing is “can’t. stop. watching” fascinating. (via Sherri)

Got a bug up my butt to write an old-fashioned country song. So I did.

Whew. That’s enough blogging for one week. I think I need to go lie down.

Where’s the Earth-shattering KA-BOOM?

It’s not every morning you awake and say, “Oh crap…I wasn’t jolted out of bed by a loud noise…”

When the alarm went off at 5:30, my first thought was that I had not heard the sound of Discovery landing. (When it flies over us on its way to the Cape, it sets off a pair of sonic booms that shakes the walls, depending on which way it comes in.) But it just looks like they’ve postponed the landing until tomorrow, due to crappy weather.

The little streams of alcohol come trickling down the rocks…

Tonight was silly fun.

We had a church supper and talent show, and after a good, old-fashioned meal of baked beans and hot dogs and potato salad and blueberry pie and other delectable goodies, we had some goofy skits and singing. Pepperkat and I led a sing-a-long of “You Are My Sunshine,” and we goofed around with the “real” version of “The Big Rock Candy Mountains.”

As you can see by this Wikipedia article, the song has a history. I kept thinking that Shirley Temple did the kiddie version of the song, but it was actually Burl Ives.
