The only reality shows that I can stand are the ones like 1900 House and Frontier House, where they put modern folk into un-modern surroundings and see how they like living in the real “good old days.” The only thing I don’t get is how they continually manage to come up with people who fail to grasp the fact that they can’t just pop down to the store and buy shampoo.
Anyway, the latest of these projects is Manor House, in which one family gets to play the wealthy family in an Edwardian mansion, while a group of 14 others see what it was like to be ground under the bootheels of the British class structure of 1905. Kind of a live version of Upstairs-Downstairs.
The PBS site has a nifty quiz to go along with the series. How big a snob are you? I scored a 45. I think the Wal-Mart question pushed me upstairs a little.
Next up: Colonial House.
A few weeks ago, they played all the Manor House episodes in one day. I spent an entire Saturday watching them. It was fascinating, educational and incredibly entertaining. Beats any “reality” show on Fox by a mile.
I took the test the other day and came out quite the snob. Go figure, eh?

My mom and I watched a few episodes of that the other day. We had fun laughing at the clueless “upstairs” family. You’re right, lots better than any of the other “reality” garbage.

I scored higher on the snob-o-meter than Solonor! I can’t stand it! I think it was because I actually know who the Hilton Sisters are, but fer cryin’ out loud, the only reason I know who they are is because they run around half naked on public so much that their paparazzi pictures are all over the internet! ARRGGGGGHHHH
My god, I grew up so very close to Levant. I have cousins who make the characters in The Hills Have Eyes look like those on The West Wing! I drink Michelob most of the time! (not by choice, actually, only because my buddy won’t drink proper Sam Adams, but still….) I drive a Ford!
I have vinyl siding on my house! My idea of a great night out is going to the topless bar for a few drinks! I like AC/DC, BTO, Bob Seger and Aerosmith! Where have gone wrong???????????

My snobbified *wannabe* ex-husband tried the Eliza Doolittle thing on me…to make me *presentable* to his snobbiferous yuppie friends. It never took. He dumped my riff-raffy-ass, which freed me up to marry Mike…who loves my riff-raffy ass the way it is!
And that is really what it’s all about, right???
I loved Manor House! I blogged about it back when they aired them all on one day – I was lucky enough to get them all on the Tivo. I’ve already watched them once and I’m going to watch them a few more times before I delete them or copy them off to tape. They were great!
