A few of us went to the house of a friend who lives near the office to watch the Inauguration festivities.
While we are all old enough to remain wary of anyone who promises anything in a political speech, you could have heard a pin drop during Obama’s address.
He’s not some angel sent from heaven or a messiah to save us all. But it sure is nice to hear an eloquent leader talk to us like adults.
It’s been a long 8 years.

This is what they wrote on January 17, 2001, upon the inauguration of George W. Bush:

During the 40-minute speech, Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.
On the economic side, Bush vowed to bring back economic stagnation by implementing substantial tax cuts, which would lead to a recession, which would necessitate a tax hike, which would lead to a drop in consumer spending, which would lead to layoffs, which would deepen the recession even further.
Whatever they write about Obama, I would listen to them carefully.
If nothing else, I can’t wait to see Monsters vs. Aliens (spoilers) because Stephen Colbert plays the President. But add in the super cool (ok, super geeky) premise of a secret government organization that has gathered up monsters like a 40-foot tall woman (Reese Witherspoon), a super intelligent cockroach (Hugh Laurie), a brainless blob (Seth Rogen) and the missing link (Will Arnett), headed by an insane general (Kiefer Sutherland), to fight an alien invasion by Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson), and I’m all over it.
First it was Ricardo Montalban, now Patrick McGoohan has shuffled off this mortal coil.
Rice triumphant in final pursuit of Hall
Do I think he belongs in the Hall of Fame? Well, the Red Sox one, anyway. I’m not so convinced that he stacks up for this honor, statistically speaking. Plus, if you go by my memory, he’d be in the “oh my God, don’t let it be Rice…he’ll just hit into a stupid double play” Hall of Fame.
But you know what? I don’t give a crap!
Until the Hall of Fame selects players according to statistical guidelines, it’s a nostalgia contest, and the players just have to impress the baseball writers’ memories more than the other guys they’re lumped in with that year. It just took Rice 15 tries to get lucky enough to only have Ricky Henderson, Andre Dawson, Bert Blyleven, etc., to compete with.
So, I’m happy for the guy. He had a great run. Made lots of happy baseball memories, and there are far worse choices in the Hall.

I really liked the original Electric Company in the 70’s. “The Adventures of Letterman” (narrated by Joan Rivers and featuring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder)…Road Runner cartoons…Spider-Man…
It looks like the new one is going to have a different format (super-powered kids protecting their neighborhood from their natural-foods diner?) and not nearly the level of star power (at least to start). Besides Rivers, Mostel and Wilder, the original had Bill Cosby, Rita Moreno, and Morgan Freeman as regular performers. Tom Lehrer even wrote music for it. And Irene Cara (later of “Fame” fame) was one of the kids in the cast. Still, it’s nice to see something new and interesting to help kids learn.
