Y.A.U.T., part 2

Yet Another Useless Trip, part 2…back to North Carolina again….only this time I get to fly into Norfolk, Virginia–site of a major naval shipyard–on September 11. Whee! And, to add more joy, Tropical Storm Gustav is headed that way! Double whee!!

All this so that I can sit there and prevent another software company from claiming our software doesn’t work. The irony of it all: The other company is located in Orlando…about 30 minutes from me. So, we’re both flying to North Carolina to meet face-to-face!

I know, I know…at least you got a job, moron…

Save Farscape

Save Farscape!!! Save Moya!!!

I hate to be a doubting Thomas, but if SciFi is that determined to start destroying sets of one of their hightest rated shows on Wednesday, I doubt they’ll listen to the fans that put it there.

But, for McSweeny, we’ll give it a shot! Go there, and make your voice heard.

One Nation

The service this morning was taped and it is available here.

It was beautiful.

For you who shy away from church because of such things, there was no sermon…only music, words of hope, and the message that we are one nation–black, white, Arab, Jew, Christian, Muslim, and we ought to start treating each other that way.

A Service of Hope

With all of the talk about the “best” way to remember September 11, I thought I would chip in my two pennies…

I am sorry I didn’t think of this earlier. I especially hope that anyone taking or giving grief to others over the 9-11 anniversary will see this in time.

Venita and I belong to a small (12-member) Presbyterian church choir. At Thanksgiving and Easter, our choir joins with other community church choirs for a program of celebration and thanks at the Forest Lake Seventh Day Adventist Church. It works out great, because they worship on Saturday, and the rest of the churches can have their regular services on Sunday.

This Saturday, we will come together in a special service of music and remembrance. We just got back from practice, and it will be exactly the “best” way to observe the anniversary of the tragedy…communities gathered together to reflect and to gather some hope that tomorrow will be better than today.

Normally, I wouldn’t even mention this. But I found out that their church streams special services over the Internet. So, whether it’s the 8:30am, 9:50am or 11:30am service (12:30, 13:50 and 15:30 GMT), you can go to http://www.forestlakechurch.org/worship/services.asp and click on one of their live feeds.

This is how I feel…how I cope…if it helps you, great. If not, don’t take this as preaching. You should also know that I am not a big fan of organized religion in-general. I find selling God like some new floor wax as horrible as the hucksters trying to make a buck off the 9-11 tragedy or the morons using it to stage protests against illegal immigrants.

Maybe this service will do something for you. I hope it will at least be a decent concert, if nothing else.

100 Banned Books (41-50)

Halfway home in the 100 Banned Books!

41
TITLE: To Kill a Mockingbird
AUTHOR: Harper Lee
ISBN: 0446310786
Plot Summary: The classic story of growing up in the American Deep South in the 1930’s. In it, a lawyer must defend a black man accused of raping a white woman, while single-handedly raising two young children.
Complaints: Sexual themes, offensive language, racial themes
Considered “dangerous” because of profanity and undermining of race relations. Challenged (temporaily banned) in Eden Valley, Minnesota, 1977; Vernon-Verona-Sherill, New York, School District, 1980; Warren, Indiana, township schools, 1981; Waukegan, Illinois, School District, 1984; Kansas City, Missouri, junior high schools, 1985; Park Hill (Missouri) Junior High School, 1985. Protested by black parents and NAACP in Casa Grande (Arizona) Elementary School District, 1985.
Solonor Says Ban It Because: I can’t come up with a even a sarcastic reason to ban this book. How could anyone be so insane as to think that this book–which is about mob rule and racial stereotypes and hatred–teaches kids racism or shouldn’t be taught because they might be made “uncomfortable”. Of course, they should be made uncomfortable by those things! Good grief, people, have a clue.

Wake Me Up Next Time

In my zeal to slam the Prez and all the other money-grubbing opportunists, I left out the biggest dollar-sucking machine of all: Congress! I don’t know why I was so shocked by Patriot Day. After all, it’s been the law of the land since DECEMBER! Duh. Somebody buy me a newspaper every once in awhile, ok?

House Joint Resolution 71, introduced and passed 407-0 on Oct 25, agreed to unanimously by the Senate on Nov 30, signed by the President on Dec 18.

Stunned, But Not Surprised

I knew it was coming. There was just no way the Hallmarks of the world would let the opportunity pass. And now it’s official. We have completed our journey down the road of lost dignity. CNN.com – Bush proclaims September 11 ‘Patriot Day’ – September 5, 2002.

Back in June, it was kind of funny (in a “they’re not really gonna do it anyway” sort of way). We talked facetiously about naming the impending date after the first thing we thought on that terrible morning–“Holy Fucking Shit Day“. There is even a web site devoted to it now.

I knew we’d have to live with maudlin memorials, tacky commemorative junk, and weepy testimonials from people trying to make a buck. But I never really thought it would come down to the President of the United States scooping up the last few tears from the dirt of ground zero and putting it into his political warchest. I don’t know why. Naive, I guess.

So, I guess my petty whine about the fact that he stole Patriot’s Day from us Maine and Massachusetts people isn’t so out of place!
