Send Emily to DC

No, not my Emily. Suzie and Tim’s Emily! She’s been nominated to attend the People-to-People World Student Leadership Forum in Washington, and she needs to scrape up the cash to go.

I know for a fact how great this program is, because we dug up the funds to send our Emily to Europe with People-to-People (pics here). It was the greatest thing for her in so many ways.

The Internets are useless if you can’t help out someon. So, dig around in the couch, past the empty nacho bags, and see if there’s any spare change for Emily. Then, go to www.sendemilytodc.com/ and show some love.

Anyone in Syracuse listening?

I got an e-mail this weekend from the program director of WAER in Syracuse. He wanted a copy of the CD for their acoustic/folk show Common Threads. Purty cool, non?

Listen to their webcast on Sundays from 2pm-4pm, and you might hear meeeeee.

X-Men 3: The Last Stand

We went and saw X-Men III last night. It wasn’t as good as the first two, but not for lack of familiar elements or cool nods to fans. They threw in a Sentinel and a couple of “fastball specials”; included Beast and Angel so that all five of the origninal X-Men (Beast, Angel, Cyclops, Iceman and Jean Grey) would be in the same movie; had plentry of Wolverine kicking butt and calling Beast “furball” and Colossus “tin man”; had Magneto show off his awesome power by ripping the Golden Gate Bridge off its pylons; had cameos by Stan Lee and Chris Claremont; added more mutants than you can shake a Morlock at; got Rebecca Romijn naked; and even managed to wink at an un-funny internet parody. Beast came off quite well, actually. Much better than I feared. And the story itself wasn’t bad.

They continued to mess with the X-Men canon, but that’s pretty much been ripped up and tossed into the air like confetti even before the movies started mucking things up. About the only thing that made me go “WTF?” this time was Callisto’s makeover. If I hadn’t been told who she was, I wouldn’t have known.

So, why didn’t I like it so much? I’m not sure. Maybe it was that they tried to squeeze so many things into such a short movie. These days, I expect a movie to be 3 hours if it’s got that much to tell. This one comes in at less than 2 hours. That makes for a lot of cutting between storylines, and while it’s not hard to keep up with, there are a few scenes that seem to get cut short (the Danger Room sequence at the beginning, for example). There are just too many mutants competing for screen time. Focus, Pinky, focus!

I also didn’t like the Dark Phoenix Saga getting reduced to a bit role in a movie about a mutant cure. They never set out to do the whole thing right (including battles on the Moon, the Shi’ar Empire, the Watcher, and the whole cosmic thing), so why did they feel like they even had to put it in? Sure, the scenes where Jean goes fiery are great, but she is never the fearsome destroyer of worlds. She’s more like a zombie with a bad temper and mad TK skillz.

The last stand? Well…maybe… I somehow doubt that the powers-that-be will give up on their cash cow quite so easily. Not to spoil it, but nobody they can’t live without in a future film dies, and the world isn’t exactly 100-percent mutant-safe. I’d be willing to bet on seeing another X-Men film eventually.

Oh!! We always stay to the bitter end, but most people bolt out of there. This time, I had to go to the bathroom, and I almost decided to wait for Whiny and V to come out, but I went back in just in time to see the final scene. Do not leave until the end credits are done.

Pharoah High

Ok, I don’t feel like leaving a rant up at the top all day (and possibly all week, as I’m heading to Nashville tomorrow for the annual meeting of the Solonor-BusyMom Mutual Depreciation Society). So, instead, here’s a cool, new video.

Sunday morning rant

This long, but stunning, rant by Mamacita drives home an excellent point. We’re testing kids to death and taking all creativity and fun out of school (thus the perceived need for a Rescuing Recess campaign).

Schools spend half their allotted time reviewing for the state’s standardized test (in ours it’s the dreaded FCAT), and the results of said test not only determine who graduates but also which schools get the money. Except it’s totally backwards! The assumption is that all schools are equal. Thus, if one school does worse than another, it’s not because they don’t have resources. It’s because they suck. Close ’em down! And the rich schools get richer, and the poor schools get poorer.

I guess the kids are getting life lessons after all.

Current TV

Anyone who wants to contribute can upload a video. Then, everyone in the Current online community votes for what should be on TV. You can join in at either stage — watch & vote or create & upload. (We’ve also got online training to help you get the skills you need to make TV!)

I’ve been watching the new addition to our cable lineup this weekend. It’s called Current TV, and it’s the coolest thing since YouTube.

Ok, maybe not, but it’s definitely different. And it is the most interesting thing on cable since Trio went off the air.

Yet more ways to buy my CD!

The pitiful sales figures for my CD are not from lack of availability! Besides putting it for sale on Amazon.com and making it downloadable via echospin and SoundClick myself, the amazing folks at CD Baby have put it on Tower Records web site and submitted it to 29 online music services, including iTunes, Napster and MSN Music (though it’s not available at any of those places, yet). Well, now they have struck a deal with Super D One-Stop that means you can order my CD at one of over 2400 retail stores in the U.S., Australia, France, Japan, the U.K., Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Italy and Mexico.

There’s a huge list of the stores that use Super D, organized by country and city (and state in the U.S.). For example, in Orlando you can walk into CD Warehouse and East-West Compact Discs & Tapes on Orange Avenue and order a copy. In Bangor, Maine, you can get it at Bull Moose in the Maine Square Mall and Summit Sound on Ohio Street.

So, if you want to get my CD (and who doesn’t?), but you don’t feel comfortable ordering it online, let me know where you live, and I’ll tell you what store in your area can get it for you!

Mmmm…

It is not often (ever?) that I get a chance to spend an evening having dinner with friends, followed by wine and conversation until almost midnight–while on a business trip! But that’s what I did Tuesday night, thanks to Brian, Bridget, Charlotte and Shelley.

Pictures of the yummy goodness.
