It’s a busy life in Camelot

I think there was some confusion about my recent post where I said I was needing to start up a promotional site. I meant another one. (“lestah.com” is available, actually.) I’m not shutting down solonor.com for a good long time. So, in spite of that loud silence here lately, you can be certain to always get your fix of peeping into the window of my life, ya perverts!

Speaking of peepers, we fixed ours on Kingdom of Heaven last night. Man, I love dollar movie theaters!! Even if the movie is not one for which I’d pay full ransom, it ain’t so bad to see things like Miss Congeniality 2 for a buck. Although, I think I saw George Washington cry when we handed his picture over for The Pacifier. (Vin Diesel compelled me with the power of his mind.)

Anyway, Kingdom of Heaven was pretty good. Not great. Not bad. I thought that the story kind of wandered a bit. And the battle scenes were, if anything, too realistic. So many arms flailing and so much blood spurting that you can’t really keep track of who is hitting whom. And in one overhead shot, where the walls of Jerusalem have been breached, it basically looks like a mob of subway passengers struggling to get past each other to no end.

Considering it’s a movie about the crusades in these post-9/11 days, I thought it handled the subject of Christians vs. Muslims pretty well. Historically… well, it is a movie. However, it’s at least mostly based in fact. The made-up bits, as usual, involve our hunky male lead (Orlando Bloom) and the beautiful princess (Eva Green). That’s Hollywood. If you want the real story (and spoilers), see the Wikipedia article on the movie.

Sadly, Monty Python has forever scarred me from seeing an historical epic on the crusades. When the Knights Templar showed up, I expected them to start singing and dancing. And when Balian (Orlando Bloom) is shown his father’s estate of Ibelin, I swear I heard someone say, “It’s only a model.”

At the risk of being trendy…

I get asked a lot, “What music are you listening to?”

I usually stammer and remind these people how old I am and tell them that I haven’t bought a CD in years. I usually listen to the same old stuff (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

But now I can actually say I like something relatively hip and now and happenin’, man. That’s because my son’s got me hooked on The Decemberists.

Don’t tell me all about how they’ve been around for years and that I’m late to the party. Humor an old guy, willya?

Zzzzzzap!

“Come to Florida,” they said.
“We have year-round sunshine and no snow,” they said.
“And sandy beaches… and theme parks…”

How come no one told me about the daily lightning strikes? You know… the ones that knock out your cable modem, because you haven’t set aside the money to buy a UPS even though you live in Florida and know you’re gonna get your power knocked out at least 27 bazillion times during the summer and have it fry your electronical equipment when it surges back on?

Actually, I think it’s a plot by my place of employ to get me to come into work early. Yeah! It’s all their fault! They could have bought me a UPS, but isn’t it suspicious that they didn’t? Hmmm…

Psst. Hey, buddy, we got high-speed internet access. We just gots a little job for ya to do first…

Not Fade Away

Not posting much lately, because I’ve been thinking about dumping this site and growing the hell up.

(The silliness of that statement makes me laugh. That can’t be all bad, right?)

Actually, I am seriously considering what kind of a site I need if I want to push the whole songwriter thing. I’ve got a little red notebook full of songs and song ideas, I’m just not making any headway in recording stuff lately. In any case, I think solonor will be around for a while as a place to dump silly links and goofy stories of family life, but I’ll probably be introducing a more sales-y, self-promoting site soon. (Yuck. I can’t even stand to think about it. Maybe that’s why I’m so slow getting started?)

Speaking of evil books…

In anticipation of the midnight release party that every book store in the universe will have upon the arrival of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, my sainted spouse was put in charge of decorating her store’s front window for it. Given a budget that wouldn’t even buy a small bag of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, she still wanted to make it something special. So, she spent this past weekend scouring stores for odd trinkets and begging others to let her borrow stuff. So, she’s got potion bottles and a crystal ball and various other Potteresque items on display.

The piece de resistance became a set of the fictional books within the Harry Potter series. She covered old books (like a copy of our yellow pages for “Hogwarts: A History”) with cardboard covers, spray-painted them solid colors, then hand-painted titles and gold filigree on them.

Yes, she is nuts.

But wait. There’s more.

As with the last time, the wife and youngest muggle child will be participating as Professor Flossy Slapcabbage and random Hogwarts student (yes, in costume). Well, guess who else got roped into this extravaganza? Yep. I don’t exactly know what I’m going to be, but I will be reading the first chapter of the book to the throngs of kidlets and grown-up kidlets waiting to get their paws on the magical tome.

Now, since 3-of-4 of us are participating, what say we force Whiny to play dress up, too?

Oh! I almost forgot! Since her store is in a mall and right next to the movie theater, do you think the crowds might be swelled by the release of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that same night?

Nah. Me neither.

When nine hundred years old YOU reach, look as good YOU will not, hmm?

Yes, today is another in a never-ending and increasingly common series of days in which we all get to feel OLD. Finally, overcoming much doubt, my son (whom I have always referred to on this blog as Whiny the Elder) is graduating from high school.

Pictures will follow.

With sharp pointy teeth!

My so-called “friend” (the same one who shot the Busy Mom pic) sent me some more pictures from our trip last weekend.

I had this long explanation about how this picture came to be. But I don’t think you’ll buy it, so I’m not gonna bother.
