Sunday Sermon #1

Here’s a New Year’s Resolution that some of you will like and others will despise. Good thing it’s my blog not yours, eh?

I’m going to devote my Sunday post from now on to matters religious.

Margaret! Shut off the damned PC. That Solly Falwell feller’s a-comin’ on!

Really, I don’t mean to scare anyone off. I’m not in the conversion biz. I’m not so all-fired sure of my beliefs that I think I can always defend them in a rational debate or use them to bludgeon someone over the head with them. And while I wouldn’t say I’m strictly non-judgmental with people all the time, I ain’t about to start throwing stones in this glass house.

I just thought that perhaps I could do a “What did you learn in church today, Johnny?” post in order to clarify in my own mind what I thought I heard. If you get anything out of reading it too, then so be it.

Today’s lesson is thankfulness.

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience, forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. – Paul’s letter to the Colossians, Ch 3, Verses 12-15.

No matter how meager the blessings you might think you’ve been given lately, they are a bounty untold compared to the thousands of suffering Iranians this week. God doesn’t magically hand out blessings. We are the delivery mechanism. So, if you believe in God, you have no choice but to help. If you don’t, then I appeal to whatever spark is inside you that drives you to do good works.

Michele has a wonderful post on the loss of a piece human history at Bam. She includes several ways to help. I urge you to respond.

Dammit! Down in front!

Apparently the husband of the target of my amorous advances keeps getting in the way of the microwave relay I’ve got pointed at Minnesota. So, instead of her, it’s him that can’t keep his mind off me!

He is kinda cute. Maybe it’s a Freudian slip on my part…

Oh, is there a blog still here?

What a nice relaxing few days it’s been. I’m sure my retail-slavin’, buttocks-bustin’ spouse won’t agree (something about getting up at 4am to go to work in a mall every day), but I’ve had a wonderful time.

Today she had the day off and didn’t want to be stuck inside all day, since it was so absolutely gorgeous out. So, we just did like we used to do in Maine before we had a thousand channels of TV, a Playstation, DVD’s and PC’s to suck up our time. We hopped in the car and drove nowhere.

For about 7 hours the road was our occupation. We drove up 17-92 through Sanford and Deland up to Palatka, then back down through the Ocala National Forest. Stopped and had a completely off-the-diet, truck driver type supper at a simple little restaurant called Spoon Fork ‘n’ Knife in Salt Springs. Listened to a bad (I mean really bad) oldies station, then Prairie Home Companion. And generally had a wonderful time.

In case you’re interested, here’s a map of the area. Just ‘cuz I felt like it.

Peace on Earth! Gimme Presents!

OK, so forget about the last post. That was just for when I didn’t think I was getting anything for Christmas. We all know it’s really about the loot!

I got Red Wine for Dummies, ‘cuz I’m old and have to drink this stuff (oh darn), so I might as well know something about it. A computer game named Cossacks. I overlooked it when it first came out, but it looks really cool. A nifty calendar called 365 Tiny Paper Air Planes. A t-shirt from Hot Topic (am I cool or what?). I’ll take a picture of it some time. And coolest of all… the Lord of the Rings version of Risk!

I hope all your Christmases were as fun and relaxing as mine.

The Christmas Secret

Well, it’s Christmas Eve. After the build-up and the shopping and the parties, we’re down to it. Tomorrow is the Big Day™.

Of course, we still haven’t finished shopping (duh), but there’s no sense of urgency. The kids and I will go out and laugh at all the last-minute rookies frantically searching through the leftovers for an acceptable gift. (“Look! Toothpaste! Grandma loves toothpaste!”)

That’s because: A) We’re pros. I’ve been shopping on Christmas Eve for at least 20 years; and B) We know the Christmas Secret™.

The Christmas Secret™ is one which The Man™ doesn’t want you to know. In fact if everyone knew it, the American economy might not survive. It’s best that we keep it under wraps. Just between us. So, don’t go spreading this one around!

Cold Mountain

If I had not gotten past all my silly fantasies about Return of the King winning any Oscars (other than for special effects or maybe Best Director), they were swept away at last night’s viewing of Cold Mountain. This is much more typical Academy fare. It is very reminiscent of Gone With the Wind in that it has similar elements–Civil War, southern belle left to fend for herself while waiting for her handsome hero to return, a place (Black Cove Farm) that seems more important than life.
