Carnival of the Vanities #40

This week’s Carnival takes place on the backroads of the rural South. Pretty strange, until you realize that the host is A Single Guy in the South.

My Pessimistic Girlfriend

Well, she’s a girl. And she’s a friend. (Remember when we went to that La Mancha movie together, baby? Good times.) And she’s definitely pessimistic.

Anywho, her secret boyfriend has written a nifty piece of ear candy called “My Pessimistic Girlfriend”. No composer has ever been able to capture the pure essence of his subject more faithfully than this lad. It is a work of quintessential beauty in its careful juxtaposition of heartfelt love and frustrated rage. I wept.

If you’d like to stroll over to Ms. Bitter One’s blog and take a listen, it’s over in her right sidebar. Beware, though, that it’s a 7mb Real Audio download. Those of you on dial up may not be able to get it. I weep for you.

Free Speech Here Only

I’m in a ranty mood tonight, I guess. But that’s o.k., because I’m declaring this post a “Freedom of Speech Zone”. So, while you’re not allowed to say anything I don’t agree with in any other comments, this one is fine.

But beware! If you step outside the zone, you will be subject to the full force of Groovy Grove law.

What are you lookin’ at? If Ashcroft can designate where freedom of speech counts, so can I!

Gephardt: What a Tool

He did not say what I just saw him say. No let me rewind it. He’s a lawyer, for criminy’s sake. Nope. He said it. “When I’m president, we’ll do executive orders to overcome any wrong thing the Supreme Court does tomorrow or any other day.”

Well, at least that cuts down my list of candidates.

Micro Heroes Assemble!

For the past couple of years a group of people with way too much time on their hands has been making and collecting Micro Heroes. These are little gif avatars, built from a basic template, that cover the entire spectrum of comic book characters. Most of them are animated, too.

Hulk Smash!

Alex Knapp stole my review of The Hulk.

Ummm… what he said.

History Man Is My Hero

I need to pay more attention to the TV Guide. I almost missed Comic Book Super Heroes Unmasked on the History Channel. Great stuff.

Coincidentally, Michele launched a new group blog called Four Color Hell all about comics! Excelsior!

Under the Influence

According to Bloggers Rate the Most Influential Blogs by Mark Glaser in USC’s Online Journalism Review, the blogosphere’s most influential bloggers are Andrew Sullivan, Dave Winer, Jeff Jarvis, J.D. Lasica, Josh Chafetz, Brendan Nyhan, Joi Ito, and Elizabeth Spiers. (None of whom I read, sorry to say.) Yes, yes, I know he was talking about influence on the traditional media, not who’s got the best or most popular blog. And I’m not going to take Sullivan to task for putting his own name at the top of the list (if you don’t know the author, then you don’t know if it was sarcastic or egomaniacal or both).

I was going to make my own Top 10 Most Influential Bloggers, but I’m lazy and it’s almost time for my referrer list thingy anyway. Besides, everybody knows that:

Contented Sigh

What is it about Iris DeMent’s voice that hits me right in the gut? She makes me weak in the knees.

Life is beautiful when your random MP3’s come up with Johnny Cash “I Walk the Line”, Neil Young “The Needle and the Damage Done”, Iris DeMent “Mama’s Opry”, Stevie Ray Vaughan “Pride and Joy”, and The Beatles “All My Lovin'” right in a row.

Brainwashing

I made a trade. The kids could rent Scary Movie if I could make them sit down and watch 12 Angry Men.

Maybe I should have held out for The Ox-Bow Incident, too? Nah. It’s bad enough I’m making them watch The Wall.
