Convenient Relief

In my silly About Me page, I say that I work for a software company that “caters to evil multinational oil companies and their foul offspring–convenience stores.” Yes, that’s a joke, but their behavior in stepping up to the plate to help tsunami victims is widening the contrast between that statement and reality.

Convenience Industry Rallies Behind Tsunami Victims

Plus, they had a really cool link to the Better Business Bureau site that lists charities that are collecting for the relief efforts and whether or not they meet the standards for charity accountability. Just in case blind faith isn’t your thang…

Oopsie…

Apparently, when you put up Google ads to make money off people clicking on them, you’re supposed to pretend they’re not there!

According to the e-mail I received from the AdSense team, I was not supposed to encourage people to click on the ads. They did, however, include the same response that everyone else is getting–that Google is looking at the feasability of the idea of pooling AdSense revenue into a donation for disaster relief. So, perhaps by the end of the week, we might know if putting up these things has been worth it.

A nice lucky number

Well, I spent today finishing up the last song for the CD. That makes it an even 13.

I wrote an annoyingly sweet pop tune as the song du jour. I admit it. I’m a sucker for those catchy pop/rock songs with blaring guitars and vapid lyrics. So, sue me. I still couldn’t help throwing in a little snarkitude…

I’ll Be With You.mp3

I also finally decided on the order of the tracks for the CD. And if you peek into the extended entry, I’ll show you the awesome cover art that my dear, sweet brandelion made for me.

Happy New Year, my little monkeys!

Oh, wait, this is the Year of the Rooster. 2004 was the Year of the Monkey. Last year was all about throwing feces. This year is all about crowing. (Note the meticulous avoidance of any “cock” jokes. You’re welcome.)

We spent ours in our usual fashion… holed up in a dark room watching flickers of light on the wall for entertainment.

Our midnight movie this year was A Series of Unfortunate Events. No, nothing untoward happened. That’s the name of the movie. And it was most excellent. Jim Carrey was a little over-the-top, but fit the part nicely. The children were wonderful. I loved the twins they had playing Sunny. (“Bite me!” Hee.)

Hopefully, you all came out of your New Year’s Eve celebrations intact!

Google Ads for Charity

So, they’re not exactly the quickest way to raise funds. However, when every penny helps, even the little bit that a click on one of the ads earns is significant. I’ve only had them up since last night, and just between my own clicking and whoever else has taken the time to open and close a web page they’ve already made a little bit of money! (Google policy does not allow you to encourage people to click the ads, and clicking your own ads is forbidden.)

If news reports are accurate (and I hope they’re not), entire islands off the coast of Aceh may have been completely wiped out, killing nearly 400,000 people.

So, every time you visit this site, I beg you to click on an ad. I don’t put up a Paypal button here. I’ve never had ads on the site for my own benefit. And I almost never ask you to do anything beyond laughing and pointing at the monkeys in the cage (that would be us). The least you could do is spend 5 seconds being annoyed by some dumb advertisement.

If you have your own site, consider doing the same thing. At the same time, shoot off an e-mail to Google to ask them to have these funds automatically sent to the Red Cross. Scott Hanselman’s idea is a good one, but it takes numbers.

If you want to copy my e-mail, please feel free.

Subject: AdSense donations for disaster relief

Please, consider the idea going around the blogosphere of creating a pool of AdSense revenue that can be donated to tsunami disaster relief. I know that you don’t pay out to individuals until the earnings reach a certain level. However, if 100,000 blogs earned a mere 75-cents each from click-thrus and that were pooled together, that’s $75,000 for disaster relief!!

On the humanitarian side, this would be an awesome gesture from one of the internet’s premiere companies. Looking at it more cynically, this should be the Google publicity department’s dream.

Thank you.

Ads that make sense

The observant among you will notice the addition of Google ads to this site. They will be there for a while (at least until I see if they generate any revenue). As I said, all proceeds from the ads will be going to the Red Cross.

Icon of Lauds Awards

My blog tenants are having their own year end awards, called the Icon of Lauds Weblog Awards. Only those who are madly in love with Bran, Pete or Jools can make up a category and nominate. (They threw me in there, too, because they’re afraid I’ll raise their rent.) So, if you feel like having some silly fun (and especially if you’re a member of the SGCBL), head on over and join the party.
