Football: Week 1

I am not a football fan. I realize that this is sacrilege in Florida, but that’s just the way it is.

Yet, I do participate in the just-for-fun office pool every year (where the main point is not so much to pick the winners as it is to see who can waste the most company bandwidth on trash talk). I don’t have a fancy schmancy Beagle Handicapping System like Peat, but I actually won the darn thing one year (and came in one spot from the bottom last year).

However, since I don’t really follow the football news as long as the Red Sox are still playing, I often forget who I picked. So, I’m posting the picks here for my own purposes. If anyone wants to follow along at home, don’t blame me when they repossess your car.

Dear Aunt Nettie…

The internet is big. So, even though I’ve been using it since the late 1950’s, I am sometimes introduced to sites that have been around for years but are new to me.

Dear Aunt Nettie… is one. Grump pointed my browser there indirectly by showing me the related Museum of Depressionist Art.

Billed as “America’s Oldest Internet Guru”, Aunt Nettie has been answering questions in her own snarky manner since 1996. If you need to lose a few pounds in the ole derriere, you could spend days laughing your ass off in her archives.

Here is one of my favorites:

Boy Scout Geek

We call him “Cableman” because he’s the guy that takes an empty pill bottle, a 9-volt battery and a white LED and makes a flashlight out of it.

I spent a lot of time driving around looking for “D” batteries last week. Come to find out, all I really had to do was finish off that bottle of sleeping pills!

It’s like 1962 all over again!

OK, this will be my last hurricane post (at least until next week).

Can anyone get an update on how these folks fared? Because if one more of these things is coming, I’m gonna be digging up the back yard soon, too.

Duck and cover!

Ah, the sweet smell of civilization!

Hallelujah and praise Progress Energy! We arrived home from Grump’s house tonight at about 9:15 and saw the warm glow of electric goodness shining through the windows!

Thanks to all who called to make sure we were ok. And thanks to Ric the Schmuck for being quite un-schmuck-like and checking on us at regular intervals. It helps to get through these things when you know you’ve got friends who care.

Our thoughts are with those who didn’t escape Frances quite so easily. If you could toss a few pennies at the Red Cross right now, they’d probably appreciate the help. They’re still lending the west coast of Florida a hand from Charley, and now they’ve got widespread devastation from Frances to deal with.

The One Thing That I Hate Almost As Much As The Yankees…

Another Reason To Hate The Yankees

I don’t have a Solonor update for you as I type this. I called around 5:30PM, and got an answering machine. Which I thought was a good sign. Maybe the power is back on!

Then I checked here, and there is no update from him. Hmmmmmmm.
Maybe they have voice mail, as opposed to an answering machine. Oh well, I shall try again later.

Now then, to the point. I hate the Yankees. Always have, and always will. Comes from being a life-long Red Sox fan. However, I think when more people hear about the latest from The Evil Empire, there will be more folks opposed to The Sons of Steinbrenner. Check this out.

No Power, But No Big Problems

As of 7:30PM, things were stable at Chez Rasreth. They still have no power, and don’t expect it back until tomorrow, but other than that, they are doing fine.

It’s mostly wind issues now. The rain seems to have moved past them. But the winds are still too blustery to allow the power companies to get much accomplished towards getting power restored. Which is why they don’t really expect power back until tomorrow.

But despite that, Solonor and family seem in good spirits, all things considered. And the most important thing is that they are safe and sound. Things should get back to normal around this section of the Blogiverse soon.

So Far, So Good

I just got off the phone with Solonor. All is well there, at least to this point. They only recently lost power (just before 11AM) and got through the night without incident. Pancakes for breakfast and everything!

With all of their valuable stored on high spots (I’m sure Solly will elaborate), they are settling in for board games. The Game Of Life is first up on the schedule. They are well stocked for food, water and such.

I’ll check in with them later today. So far, so good. Given the circumstances.

Morning Update

Just letting everyone know that we’re still here.

Pepperkat and I slept in the living room with the TV on. I think we got a couple of hours of sleep. Meanwhile, Whiny and Mrs. R slept like babies. Bastidges.

We’ve got some wicked wind storm going on right now. And the heart of it still hasn’t shown up. (Yikes, Fox35 just said that the hurricane force winds that are hitting Melbourne right now will be starting to hit here in about 15 minutes!)

Hold on, friends. We’ve got a whole day of this crap still to go.
